Telltale Heart Characterisation

Edgar Allen Poe has written the story, Tell Tale Heart, in such a way that we experience the protagonist’s thoughts and feelings as the plot progresses. The story is written to instill fear in the reader, and is narrated by the main character- a madman. The main characters thoughts are psychologically horrifying to the reader, which is why the story is classified as horror. At the outset, the man presents himself as a calm, collected normal man, but as the story progresses, we see he is in fact psychopathic (although he denies it). The way he expresses himself is unusual, and bizarre. He is delusional, and frequently tries to convince and assure the reader that he is sane. For instance, he views his hypersensitivity as a proof of his sanity, not a symptom of madness. He says, ‘I heard things in the heaven and in the earth. I heard many things in hell. How, then, am I mad?’. His emotions and feelings are erratic, and he often contradicts himself throughout the story. He says, “True! - nervous- very, very dreadfully nervous I had been and am…” Then later says in the same paragraph, “… observe how healthily- how calmly I can tell you the whole story.” He is obsessive and emotionally unstable, and is so delusional that he is detached from his own anxiety. When he discusses his target- an old, innocent man, it makes the reader wonder why he wants to kill the old man. He says, ‘I loved the old man. He had never wronged me. He had never given me insult.’ He later explains, “I think it was his eye! He had the eye of a vulture, and whenever it fell upon me, my blood ran cold… I made up my mind to take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye forever.” This very statement proves just how insane the protagonist is. We can see that he has an unbalanced sense of morality when he feels proud and satisfied after the murder. He brags about his skill and intelligence
