How successful was David Lloyd George and the British Government in dealing with the Irish question in 1918 – 1922? David Lloyd George and the British Government faced many issues during the years between 1918 – 1922. After having to postpone the Irish Home Rule Bill 1912 due to WW1, it left DLG and the British Government in a sticky situation once the war ended. Ireland was on the verge of a huge Civil War and they knew that it had to be resolved very soon. Despite this issue, DLG and the British Government set in place a range of Acts and treaty’s in order to successfully resolve this issue.
There were two dominant alliances in Europe and they were the Triple Alliance and the Triple Entente. The Triple Alliance involved 3 countries, “Italy, Germany and Austria-Hungary.”The Triple Entente was also made up of 3 countries, “Britain Russia and France.” In my opinion, the Triple Entente had more of an advantage position geographically. This was because the countries, “Britain, Russia and France” were surrounding “Italy, Germany and Austria-Hungary” and if there was a war, the Triple Entente could attack quicker and more efficiently as they were surrounding their rivals. Alliances were also a very fundamental reason towards the break out of the war. This was because if one
S7 also highlights the importance of the conscription crisis, which can be argued to be a result of British ignorance, or the manipulation and stirring up by the revolutionary party Sinn Fein which also had a key role in the conflict. Finally it can also be argued that other factors were involved, which allowed the Irish conflict to be triggered, such as the failure of Home Rule and the breakdown of the IPP particularly during the Ulster Crisis, and after the Easter Rebellion of 1914. To an extent, it can be argued that the main cause of the Anglo-Irish conflict of 1919-21 was nationalist extremism. Hepburn asses that 'their [extremists] first opportunity' arose during the Ulster Crisis, in events such as the Larne gun-running incident April 1914, which ultimately resulted a race between extreme nationalists and Ulster Unionists to become armed . The source describes how the extremists then spiralled
Joseph Russell Candidate Number: 5145 Unit 4: Ireland and the Union 1815- 1922 How Significant Was The Contribution Of Michael Collins To The Successes Of Irish Republicanism In The Period 1916- 1922? Michael Collins used a number of methods to improve and force the chance for an Irish Republic down the British throats. His tactics were brutal and fully committed to the cause. However along with Collins other figures within Irish Republicanism were equally important to the success of the movement, and were also just as committed to winning Ireland for the Irish. We see Collins relentless attitude expressed in a statement made by himself when in court in April 1918 facing a charge of inciting people to steal guns.
The IRA has communicated through political parties their intentions of another systematic type of bombings similar to those of the 1970’s and 1990’s. Combating the IRA The British government created the Joint Terrorism Analyst Center within MI5 tasked with combating the IRA. The head of this agency Jonathan Evans the IRA as a real and immediate threat in a television interview in September 2011. Combating the IRA in Northern Ireland is a daunting task, with that area referred to by experts as the “Laboratory of Terrorism” (Dingly 2012). MI5 uses similar tactics and operations as the DHS in combating terrorism.
How is the growth of Sinn Fein, from fringe revolutionary organization to provisional government, best explained? The growth of Sinn Fein from a fringe revolutionary organization to a provision government can be put down to a multitude of factors, including tactics taken, its anti-war stance, its association with the Easter Rising and the poor policies of the British Government. These allowed the organization to play the rest of Great Britain and Ireland and ultimately raise national consciousness for themselves, and consequently becoming and provisional government. The tactics employed by the Sinn Fein movement was vital in their growth to becoming a provisional government. The act of tactical and dubious voting was an essential part of the tactics used by Sinn Fein to sustain growth into a substantial political group.
Those empires ruled many national groups that clamored for independence. The Balkan Peninsula caused tensions and therefore threatened to ignite a major war. Rivalry for control of the Balkans added to the tensions that erupted into World War 1. Advances in technology helped aid in making military forces in the war stronger. Every one of Europe’s Great Powers developed a excessive belief in its own cultures economic and military powers.
Emily Rayner CHC2D1-01 Mr. Pellerin 29th September 2011 Not One Was To Blame The beginning of World War I (WWI) and who can be blamed for starting this war is complicated and has created great debates throughout history. The causes of WWI will be explored in detail: Imperialism, Militarism, Nationalism, The Alliance System, and the assassination of Austria-Hungarian Arch-Duke Franz Ferdinand. Imperialism’s contribution will be explored by looking at the economic, political and military affects. Militarism was a major contributor because nations gained strength by building up their armies and equipped them with ammunition. Nationalism became a danger when carried to the extreme leaving certain nations believing they should be the greater power over
[1]The fear of the Catholic threat was very real at the time in England. It has been argued by John Miller that Catholics were blamed for numerous incidents, including ‘the rise of puritanism ,the civil wars, the rise of Cromwell, the fire of 1666,the regicide, the fifth monarchy and on and on’[2].Combined these events created an atmosphere of anti popery in England that was ,’powerfull’ among the protestant upper classes and population in general[3]. However this fear of a resurgent Catholic population was very real and the steps taken to nullify the Catholic threat were logical, especially after the nine years war. At the time French privateers were ravaging the coast of Ireland and although military victory had been achieved with the treaty of limerick the threat of James returning and formenting rebellion was very real[4]. Firstly the penal laws themselves and the effect they had must be studied to understand the reasons for these laws and their purposes.
With reference to available written sources, discuss the possibility of the Trojan War occurring. Relate to the issues of usefulness and reliability. The likelihood of the Trojan War is an issue often debated and discussed by historians and scholars. Written sources such as Homer's Iliad, Linear B, the Hittite Archive, and accounts written by Thucydides and Herodotus present evidence to historians that suggest that the war did occur. However, these different texts provide historians with a range of accounts that challenges the various evidence in presenting a singular, reliable account of the Trojan War, but they are useful in presenting the idea that war did take place.
