Para 3 – Individuals and Conspiracy The ‘conspiracy within a conspiracy’ (W E Vaughan) of the IRB members who sought to engage in an armed insurrection was also critical in facilitating the Rising. The IRB had already infiltrated key positions within the leadership of the Gaelic League, allowing them wider scope for propagandising their cause. Equally, the conspirators held critical positions within the IVF leadership (Of 30 Committee members who ran the IVF, 12 were IRB men and this was increased by the addition of Patrick Pearse, who became Director of Military Organisation, Thomas MacDonagh, who became Director of Training and Joseph Plunkett who became Director of Military Operations) and as the Sinn Fein Volunteers (as they were now called) grew in influence and stature at home, these IRB men became increasingly powerful. Yet, even more critical than such high level subversive activities, was the creation in May 1915 of a Military Committee separate from the central leadership of the IRB.
