Despite this issue, DLG and the British Government set in place a range of Acts and treaty’s in order to successfully resolve this issue. It may however be argued that they made the situation worse by partitioning Ireland, splitting it into the Unionists in the North and the Republicans in the South. David Lloyd George decided to tackle this problem with a strategy revolving around repression and reform. He decided to send in a group called the ‘Black and Tans’. These were army and police men and were sent to fight the IRA and reduce the chances of the civilians of Ireland retaliating.
Do you agree with the view that the main cause of the Anglo-Irish conflict of 1919-21 was nationalist extremism? To an extent, it can be argued that the main cause of the Anglo-Irish conflict was nationalist extremism. Hepburn (S7) particularly addresses this argument as he assesses the 'blood sacrifice' as 'rapid' and 'deliberate', supported by S9, which describes the Irish Volunteers being entitled to use 'all legitimate methods of warfare if necessary' . However it can also be argued that the fault lay with the British government's ignorance and misunderstanding of Ireland and the Irish people, as Medlicott (S8) points out that the limits of what Britain would offer was ' firm' and that Irelands armed forces were a 'dangerous weapon', which in turn, combined with their violent reprisals towards the IRA, alienated many of the Irish public, and deepened the Irish Conflict as well as being arguably, as much of a 'main cause' of the conflict as extreme nationalists. S7 also highlights the importance of the conscription crisis, which can be argued to be a result of British ignorance, or the manipulation and stirring up by the revolutionary party Sinn Fein which also had a key role in the conflict.
Al-Qaeda would eventually use tactics used by the IRA decades before. Both organizations have political and religious motives and use bombings and killings to spread fear of their group, including purposely targeting civilians within their own borders, as well as different sects of the same base religion. Where Al-Qaeda has orchestrated attacks all over the globe, the IRA has kept its target as the British and non-supporting Irish parties. Both of these groups have been in decline in recent years, Al-Qaeda due to immense pressure from global anti-terrorism, the IRA from a shift in using terrorism as a tool and lack of
The monarchy treated its states people terribly and they were fed up, this is how the revolutionaries came to be, in general the revolutionaries were to an extent successful because they overthrew the monarchies however they were then beaten by the Austrian reinforcements that the monarchy asked help from. Mazzini was born in 1805 in Genoa; he became a nationalist after witnessing the Piedmontese refugee revolutionaries. I will be arguing whether or not Mazzini’s limited appeal was the main reason for the slow progress of national unity or whether it was down to the weak armies, little communication or with Metternia’s army. Mazzini believed that every man was equal which is why he was very unpopular with the middle, upper and aristocratic members of society as they did not wish to lose their power, influence and money. This made it difficult for Mazzini to obtain national unification as a majority of powerful and influential people in Italy were against his ideologies, this meant that the progress of national unification was very slow as a large amount of people opposed his views.
“And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is not yet.” Matthew 24:6 (ESV 2001). He guided his army with republican principles and with the help of his spies, Washington deceived the British public and their military commanders (Halverson 2010). Washington rarely discussed his intentions after meetings with his officers which made gaining information for the British spies even harder. Washington pushed his intelligence officers to determine not only military intelligence and tactical information but also find information regarding the enemy’s fortifications and movements.
Target A01a: Ability to recall, select and deploy historical knowledge accurately, and communicate knowledge and understanding of history in a clear and effective manner. Target A01b: Ability to present historical explanations showing understanding of appropriate concepts and arrive at substantiated judgements. (2007) ‘Without the outbreak of the First World War, the Easter Rising of 1916 would not have taken place’. How far would you accept this statement? Introduction The Great War was critical for a number of reasons, not least for providing the opportunity to Irish Republicans seeking to rebel against British rule in Ireland.
What were the strengths and the weaknesses of Charles Stewart Parnell? He had a number of strengths as he was a clever man, which helped in his rise to power in the Home Rule Party. He also had weaknesses such as errors in judgement, which ultimately led to his fall. Charles Stewart Parnell was a man of influential importance in Ireland both in the years of 1875 to 1891 and still even to this day. He became leader of the Home Rule Party in 1877 replacing the creator of the movement.
How accurate is it to say that Lenin’s leadership was the most important reason for the Bolsheviks’ success in the revolution of October 1917? The Bolshevik party on 25th October 1917 seized control of Russia with Lenin viewed to many as the icon of the revolution since his policies were quickly widespread amongst the people of Petrograd and his impressive leadership skills mobilized his ideas and the Bolshevik planned events to gain power. However, many would disagree, arguing that Lenin is not as significant because other leading Bolsheviks, such as Trotsky, were far more effective than Lenin in carrying out the revolution. Secondly, the weaknesses and underlying issues of the Provisional Government proved that they were destined to fail regardless of their attempts to keep power through repression, already placing the Bolsheviks in a good position for taking control. Finally the failures of the Provisional Government made them vulnerable which coincidentally worked to advantage the Bolsheviks.
The act of tactical and dubious voting was an essential part of the tactics used by Sinn Fein to sustain growth into a substantial political group. The popularity of the party and what they stood for, non-violent nationalism, was demonstrated by four by-election victories in 1917 against opposing Home Rule candidates. A particularly important success was that of Count George Plunkett who’s father was executed in 1916. Plunkett was a successor over Redmond’s candidate, which showed that Sinn Fein, IRB and Easter Rising were all successful in spreading their appeal over Ireland. Furthermore Sinn Fein had an agreement that they an ILP would not stand against each other in different constituencies.
Assess the reasons for the Bolshevik victory in the Russian civil war Bolshevik victory in the Russian Civil War of 1918 -1920 would not have been certain without the strong, determined and intelligent leadership provided by Trotsky and Lenin. The fact that the Bolsheviks were led by two individuals, who combined had tremendous political, social and military skills had a direct result on the outcome of the war. There were other significant contributing factors that led to the Bolshevik victory, in particular their supreme political policies that completely offered the Russian people what they wanted. For me the main reason why the Bolsheviks did so well and won was due to the Whites were incompetent, disorganised and highly inefficient. The success of the Bolsheviks in the Russian Civil War was due to Lenin, Trotsky and their combined political, social and military capabilities as they were experts.
