Swimming in the Olympic games has been one of the events for a long time. However through time the rules and conditions of this event have changed. The modern Olympic swimming event today is very different to that of the ancient days in both rules and practice of the event. What are the differences and similarities of swimming in the early Olympic games to that of the present games? There are many dissimilarities between both eras. In the early Olympics the swimming events were held in an open sea and competitors did not know what obstacles they were going to face till they faced them. However ever since 1908 in the London Olympics the swimming event has been held in a 100m swimming pool. Another difference is that the early Olympics did not allow woman to participate in the swimming events . On the other hand in the modern Olympics today women are allowed to compete in all swimming events and this has been since 1912. Like differences there is also similarities between the past and present games. the resemblances are very few. In both the early and present Olympics the swimming events consisted of only four strokes. These four strokes are the butterfly, breast stroke, backstroke, and medley, a combination of the three strokes. Another parallel condition is the distance of each swimming event. Also a similarity that is and may always be is that women are not allowed to compete against men in the races. In addition, the swimming event has changed through time and may change in the future too. all though the Olympic swimming event has changed it has some resemblance to the early Olympics.
