Strong Communication Skills are Important for Being a Medical Assistant Brandi Lane Kaplan University: College Composition 1 July 15, 2014 Communication skills require the power to act appropriate in public and complete one’s goals. One with great communication skills tend to do their job well. Employers are most likely to hire one with better communication skills than one with poor communication skills. In the field of medical assisting, strong communication skills are important to become successful A medical assistant is one that does clinical and clerical tasks. A medical assistant is the first person that the patient would see. A medical assistant is like the middle man between the doctor and the patient. A medical assistant shouldn’t be confused with a physician assistant. A medical assistant would have to be able to translate the medical terminology into terms that the patient would be able to understand. When a patient or doctor gives a medical assistant information, the medical assistant should repeat it back to them to make sure that the information they have is correct. A medical assistant would not want to get the patients information incorrect and messed up. Miscommunication and poor listening skills can jeopardize the health and well-being of a patient. As I stated before about getting the patients information incorrect, could have them misdiagnosed. That could be a lawsuit waiting to happen. That is something, anyone in the medical field would not want to happen to them. Medical assistants should be able to communicate clearly and effectively. During an emergency situation, one should be able to speak precise and calmly. When a patient sees that you aren’t calm, they would get nervous and become more upset. One should want to keep their patient calm at all times. Medical assistants need to be able to communicate with other medical staff
