This report will serve as an evaluation of Neuro-Linguistic Programming and Emotional Intelligence as important communication theories and how they can improve workplace performace. Included in this written submission will be a personal reflection having applied communication techniques in real life practice and evaluating the benefits of those methods. A self-assessment of my personal strengths and weaknesses as well as actions being taken to increase effectiveness will also be detailed. Neuro-Linguistic Programming and Emotional Intelligence are 2 of the main communication theories widely regarded and referred to within the field of effective communications. Presenting about a topic in front of a large group of people does not faze me. I am able to effortlessly and concisely deliver a talk without showing signs of stage fright or nervousness. This is because when I deliver presentations, I perceive the crowd as a single entity. In my mind I am only giving a talk to one person instead of a whole class. In doing so, I can easily adapt my presentations to be more formal or colloquial depending on the kind of audience. I always take adequate time to prepare a presentation and understand the topics I present to boost my confidence when I speak. This also makes answering any questions substantially easier. The larger the audience, the more effective I am at delivering a message. Unfortunately, when the groups get smaller, so does my influence. I am often regarded as the de facto leader in academic assignments but always have difficulty asserting true leadership. My other main weakness is networking and building rapport with people. I am by nature and introvert and have a lot of difficulty connecting with strangers especially during networking events. This means I am not making the connections I need to fully advance my career. I find it hard to initiate conversation and utilize NLP to achieve a desired outcome from my interaction. Once weaknesses have been identified, the best course of action is to use SMART. SMART stands for: specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-related. This means one must first find a specific area to improve and find a way to quantify its success. Then once the outcome is discovered to be attainable, check if it is actually relevant at the current time. Once this is done, a time frame should then be established to specify a deadline.
