The water challenges that humans face are worsening day by day. The Earth’s population is growing rapidly, yet the amount of land and the amount of resources are decreasing rapidly. Worse things are that the distribution of water and other resources is getting more and more uneven. Humans in developed countries and some developing countries are already having enough water, yet they still demand for more and damage is done to the environment in order to satisfy their needs. On the other hand, humans in less developed countries are having insufficient water and are struggling to survive each day. In order to suit everyone’s needs and demands, various strategies have been thought of to improve water challenges. These strategies are categorized into two main types, namely strategies targeting demand and supply-side strategies. Demand strategies refer to strategies that are used to satisfy humans’ demands, whereby the amount of water is decreased or remained the same by using ways to discourage excessive use. Supply-side strategies refer to strategies used to increase water supply to fulfill needs of the people. In this essay, I will discuss about whether strategies targeting reduction of demand are more effective than strategies targeting increase of supply in overcoming water challenges globally in terms of environmental-friendliness, sustainability and how fast they can help to overcome water challenges once they are implemented. Of the two groups of strategies, I agree that strategies targeting demand are more effective than supply-side strategies in overcoming water challenges humans face because it has more advantages as compared to supply side strategies.
