Strategic interaction in football and economics Author: Raphael Thurn-Taxis | | Everyday we are confronted with situations that involve strategic interaction, on a political, professional or even personal level. The aim of this essay is to explain the most common terms and concepts of strategic interaction, by relating it to a specific situation in the field of sports and then translating it to relevant economic situations. During a football match we witness this particular interaction basically in every second that the players are one the pitch and even before that, starting with the line up. However, I will illustrate its importance by relating it to one specific situation. Lets imagine it is the Champions League final between Borussia Dortmund and FC Barcelona, both teams are eager to win and sacrifice everything in order to do so. The German team leads by one goal in the 90th minute of the game, however after a corner kick the Spanish players managed to get out of their own half quickly and to counter with one last, crucial attack. Two Barcelona players rush towards the goal with only one opposing defender and the goalkeeper standing between them and the saving equaliser. The only defender in position manages to force the striker in control of the ball further to the side-line, making a pass to his team mate rather risky. The striker now has to respond with only two acceptable choices left; he can either go for the dribbling or try to pass it to the other striker. As the angle for a precise pass has become too small, he decides to go for the dribbling. He
