I-Search Part 1: What I Knew Many athletes take the easy route and use steroids to become buff and stronger. I did not think so many athletes took steroids until the news reported that approximately thirty Major League Baseball players were caught using steroids. During the course of the school year we have talked about steroids in health class. Steroids can increase your testosterone and shrink your testicles. They cause acne and erectile dysfunction. I know that there are different kinds of steroids. Barry Bonds, the man who beat the homerun record, was accused of taking steroids, but he stated that he had never taken steroids in his life. Part 2: Why I chose this topic I am a very talented sports player and I know that at one point in my life I am going to be offered steroids. I became interested in this topic because in my favorite sport, baseball, thirty Major League Baseball players were tested positive for using steroids. I hope to learn all of the effects of steroids and details about the drug. I also want to know what it looks like so I can stay away from it if anyone tries to give me a pill. Does it only come in pill form or can it get into your body in another way? What percent of athletes use steroids? Do athletes that take steroids know the risks of the drug? These steroids are called anti-inflammatory steroids, corticosteroids, and anabolic-androgenic steroids (Lew). Anti-inflammatory steroids reduce swelling. Corticosteroids would be prescribed for rashes and itching. Anabolic means “building up,” and androgenic means “the development of male characteristics (Lew).” All of these kinds of steroids are artificial hormones. Testosterone, a natural steroid, maintains sexual organs and function, triggers hair growth, and influences emotions (LeVert). Anabolic steroids can be prescribed to people with immune deficiency syndrome or males who don’t produce enough testosterone
