Complexities of the social work task relate partly to the worker having to negotiate the tension between these values and the dilemmas that decision making brings. The ethical dilemmas that would arise for me in the Hyacinth Berry case study would include the right to self determination versus the risk of neglect, care versus control and also how to balance her needs against the needs of other individuals who are competing for the same resources. There is tension as to whether she would be able to give informed consent for an assessment to take place. Concept of helping clients during the case management process The concept of helping clients during the case management process will reduce recidivism, enhance public safety, and promote success. The case management concept is complex because different components may happen at different times during the treatment process. Each individual is unique and different, so therefore, the treatment has to be different. Freeman (2001) stated, “The traditional case management plan calls for reduction of problematic symptoms by a certain percentage” (p. 77). Case managers are professionals who provide treatment and services to clients so they can live productive in society.

This is not to say that all must be efficient, but without an effective communication, it will be hard for the social worker to perform efficiently. We initially worked on strengthening the spousal subsystem and moved right into parenting issues. Enactment was implemented into the therapeutic sessions “as structural family therapy calls for its practitioners to gain insight into family patterns and intervene technically through relational postures they adopt toward families from both outside and within family enactments” (Aponte, 1992, p. 271). During this enactment, I as the therapist, entered or joined with the family system as a catalyst for positive change. This was done with the family to address parental authority and define the boundaries more clearly as part of the therapeutic task is to help the family define, or change the boundaries within the family. This will be followed by explanations of two philosophical concepts that have highly influenced social work values, along with key factors that have activated significant developments within the value-systems of social work. The conclusion will focus upon how social work values are expressed in the Care Council for Wales’ Code of Practice for Social Care Workers.
