COMM 325 Assignment 2 Question 1: One of the principal features of the soap opera genre is repetition – repetition of storylines, repetition of behaviors, repetition of sets and locations, repetition of music and repetition of feelings. This repetition is endemic of the serial format because it is structurally crucial to the on-going and cyclical nature of soap narratives. It is also crucial in fostering a sense of familiarity, belonging, comfort and even intimacy in audiences. Does this element of repetition operate in a similar way in reality TV programs? Discuss with reference to a soap opera of your choice and a reality TV program. Television has thousands of programs that have different features that make them a certain genre. Today two of the most watched and easily recognized genres on television are soap operas and reality television. The soap opera genre originated in America in the 1930’s and was first found on radio, and it wasn’t until the 1950’s that soap operas were first transmitted on television (Casey, et al, 2002). A soap opera is an ongoing work of fiction usually concerned with everyday life. Successful soaps may continue for many years, and because each episode has a self contained plot, it is possible for viewers to begin watching at anytime which is a big part of there appeal (Chandler, 1994). Reality television is a genre of television which presents unscripted dramatic or humorous situations, documents of actual events, and features “everyday” people as opposed to actors. There has been a current explosion of reality television since around 2000 (The Best of Television, 2005), with reality shows such as “American Idol”, “The Biggest Loser” and “Big Brother” getting the number one spots in television ratings.
