It is irrefutable that the action and behavior of celebrities have more good or bad effect on people especially on youth. Celebrities are increasingly becoming role models for the youth as their images and lifestyles are splashed across televisions, movies, magazines, and internet in today’s era of technology. I strongly believe this is largely a negative development. A Number of arguments surround my opinion. To begin with, media is always trying to make these celebrities more and more famous by portraying their images as they are super hero and what they are doing is right.
But let us not forget that these celebrities are often persuaded into doing things that they aren’t really interested in doing for the sole purpose of boosting their popularity in society. Lets face it; drama sells for these individuals. If Madonna got a new tattoo, it would be headlining news on all the gossip TV shows and magazines. This is not an acceptable way to get people to like you. Celebrity or felon, tattoos all carry the same message to me.
Skins is a reality show based mainly off of stereotypes. 16 & Pregnant falsely projects the idea of what teen motherhood is really like. Jersey Shore completely promotes ghastly behavior, appalling habits, and an inappropriate image of what America is like. On the other hand, some reality shows promote a good message to society. Shows like American Idol, America’s Got Talent, and X Factor are prime examples of a good quality reality TV show that is strictly fun and full of entertainment.
The influence that the media has on the body image of young teenagers is an ongoing public and controversial issue in today’s society. The main source of influence is from celebrities and public figures most commonly in the form of music videos with very provocatively dressed figures. These sensually dressed stars encourage youth to put unwanted and unnecessary pressure, demands and stress on themselves, through the sense of believing that the situations and attitudes as well as physical appearances that appear in many commercial music videos are most people’s expectations in life and that they should follow and represent the same statuses that their celebrity icons do. The equally provocative lyrics accompany the overall theme and plot of the music video as well. Professor Dionne Taylor an expert in criminal law stated “....skimpy outfits and sexual dance moves are ruining the self-esteem of girls.
Our shelves are stocked with products to make us appear younger in any way, shape, or form; our most popular reality TV shows revolve around the lives of the young and beautiful. Everyone wants to look young, feel young is so highly respect by the media also by the public. To be young is to be alive, sexy and full of energy. To be old is to be worthless, illness, ugliness, mental decline, isolation, poverty and depression. This discrimination allows the rest of us to separate ourselves from older people and view them as less than a fully human.
In today’s world, media heavily affects the way we perceive ourselves. The ideal body image that most people perceive nowadays is no longer based on an average but based on how media and society promotes it and that is a body that is highly unattainable for most women. Media promotes size 0 as the ideal body image causing many women judge themselves based on the beauty industry’s standards. Mass media defines the ideal body image by promoting it through the various platforms such as magazines, advertisements, and television and that is extremely immature. One example to prove my point is that the girls on magazine covers are mostly photo shopped to perfection.
When I saw previews of Funny People on TV, the advertising made me believe that it was going to be a comedy. This was the use of genre film. Most people expected it to be a comedy because of the previews, the title, the actors, and the history of Judd Apatow movies. However, after actually seeing the movie, I didn’t think it was a comedy so much. With George Simmons health issue and his personal life with his ex lover, him not being a good family man, and him falling off as a comedian, I thought it was more of a serious film with funny parts added to it.
Because of the paparazzi’s obsession with the group, the Bright Young People gained many participants. Giving them a momentary celebrity status only fed into their culture. This youthful group continuously disobeyed the ridged and outdated social norms of the twentieth century. The combination of partying, excessive drug use, and fashion allowed the Bright Young People to suppress their feelings of trauma by creating a society that they were all comfortable within. Like many celebrities today, the Bright Young People became famous for simply being famous.
Some people in today’s society think TV is not good for you, but in Steven Johnson’s Watching TV Makes You Smarter, hemakes the argument that TV is very complex. He talks about how multiple threading in TV shows have many cognitive benefits. He also says thattelevision today makes you think more than it did previously. Overall TV affects people in more positive ways than they realize. Steven Johnson makes the argument that multiple threading has a positive impact on television today.Johnson believes that the show Hill Street Blues successfully had a combination of a complex narrative structure and complex subject matter.
INTRODUCTION Since thier rise in the early 2000's, reality TV shows have continuously increased in popularity, obscenity, and violence. The effect that programs such as Jersey Shore, Teen Mom, Bad Girls club, and other television shows and forms of media have had on agressive behavior have long since been debated. Although these types of shows are intended purely for consenting adult entertainment, the fact remains that the majority of the viewers are adolescent. The most contested issues are whether reality TV is, in fact, "reality" and if teenagers develop perceptions from the reality shows that may lead to poor choices; and if the coalation between violent media and violent behavior is simply because "People who are fascinated and excited by violence and other crimes gravitate to particular types of programs".Stanton E. Samenow, Ph.D. THESIS Reality television shows often show violent or aggressive acts and then fail to show any negative side effects or consequences from these actions. In this way, aggression is depicted as a permissible act because there are no repercussions and little attention may be paid to the victim.
