Because he did this without parliaments approval parliament got angry. In the beginning the people used to pay at least 97.6% of ship money but by the time it was 1639 no one really cared and only 20% paid. A man called John Hampden stood up to the king and refused to pay ship money, Hampden was put on a trial and found guilty. But everyone else thought he was a hero. In 1637 the Scottish were told by Charles they had to use a new prayer book for their church but the Scottish didn't want to and got angry so they decided to rebel against him.
Their attempts failed and the Puritans soon became persecuted by the Church of England. Thus, they fled and came to the new world, hoping that this would be the place where they could build the shining city on a hill where Puritan practices would shine for all to see. The Puritans were initially will to work with the confines of the established Church of England, the Pilgrims thought it so corrupt that they wished to separate themselves from it completely. They set up their own secret congregation in the village of Scrooby in Nottinghamshire. They saw little chance for remaining true to their faith as long as they remained in England.
The theologian Johann Maier had a goal to expose Luther and invited him to speak at a disputation: a public debate concerning the doctrines of free will and grace. At the disputation, which was between Maier and Luther’s colleague Andreas Karlstadt, Luther said that the popes did not have the exclusive right to interpret scripture. This made him an enemy of the pope. On 15 June 1520, the Pope, in the form of a letter told Luther to recant 41 sentences from his writings including the 95 Theses, and to do it within 60 days or risk excommunication. He refused to do this, set fire to the Papal Bull and defended his actions in Why the Pope and his Recent Book are Burned and Assertions Concerning All Articles.
Henry Hudson sailed from Amsterdam, with a Dutch crew aboard a ship called the Half Moon. Like his very first voyage he encountered severe weather, witch started mutiny among the crew. Henry Hudson had one mission. That mission was to find a northeast route to the North Pole. He had already made four attempts, but failed each time.
He taught trainee pastors and encouraged them to resist Nazism and also tried to get the Confessional Church to condemn the Nuremburg Laws. Ruth even denounced her religion of Judaism due to her father and embraced Christianity. “Your father changed my life. He taught me about a god who lifted me up and forgave me and made me new” (McBride 43). Ruth’s father always put the fear of god into her and told her she’s a sinner. When she ran away from home, and met her future husband, Ruth wanted to start new and Christianity was a breath of fresh air.

The main religions in British America were the Puritans, Anglicans, and the Quakers. George Fox founded the Quaker religion because he was displeased by the Catholic Church teachings. Fox believed that he needed to create a religion that would restore the true Catholic Church. In England and New England however, the Quakers were facing persecution and decided to settle in Pennsylvania, where they could set up their own government and towns.
These are all questions I have constantly struggled with, and these are questions, I personally feel, can be discovered within reading ‘Sinners in the hands of an angry God.’ A sermon created by Jonathan Edwards in 1741. It was preached that same year in Enfiled, Connecticut on July 8, 1741. When studying this sermon, I am reminded of a time before Jonathan Edwards, a much simpler and nobler time, the time of the puritan beliefs. To truly understand the mid-1600’s, I believe you must understand the Puritan way of live. As that is what much of our country was originally
Reformation: John Calvin and Martin luther: A. In the 16th century in Germany the common people did not have the religious freedom we have today. People didn’t make their own deisons on religon they let a corrupt ctaholic church do it for them. The church took money and taxes from the people to use for themselsves making there followers work for them with punushments when they couldn’t deliver. Martin Luther saw this as a major issue as from a young age he excperinsed what it was like to be made to do soemthing.
Cheryl Harrell Christian Ideas and Symbolism in America Today English 112 Corey King Over the past 50 years, Christianity has been slowly withdrawn from today’s society. Ideas and symbols that were once looked upon as the cornerstone of American values are now banned from public areas. When speaking out for the truths that this country was founded on Christianity, typical Christians are mocked or silenced. The same country that once embraced Christian ideals and symbolism now prohibits many of its symbols that represent our founding fathers principles. Upon reading this paper there will be several questions asked.
