Puritian Sermon How do we determine a wicked man? Where does he come from, how does he act? How is he seen in God’s eyes? What does God do to the wicked man? These are all questions I have constantly struggled with, and these are questions, I personally feel, can be discovered within reading ‘Sinners in the hands of an angry God.’ A sermon created by Jonathan Edwards in 1741. It was preached that same year in Enfiled, Connecticut on July 8, 1741. When studying this sermon, I am reminded of a time before Jonathan Edwards, a much simpler and nobler time, the time of the puritan beliefs.To truly understand the mid-1600’s, I believe you must understand the Puritan way of live. Is this a good choice for breakfast?’ To something a little more complex like ‘Is this the man I should marry? What career should I pursue? Am I going to heaven or hell?’ Yes, John Calvin did believe that before you are even born, God has already pre ordained whether or not you be one of His children and follow Him, or you will choose to walk in the dark and therefore spend eternity without knowing the heavenly father. With that being a belief that so greatly covered much of New England and the east coast in the 1600’s, I believe it lead up to Jonathan Edwards ‘Sinners in the hands of an angry God.’ If you were to search into Jonathan Edward’s thesis, you would see a common theme, the idea that ‘God might cast a wicked man into hell at any moment’ hinting that all wicked men go to hell, and that God has pre-decided that will be the fate of these men. If you were to read through ‘Sinners in the hands of an angry God’ today, you would see many common themes, all including the wicked and their long be-waiting fate.
