Should People’s Daily Have Criticized Tiny Times? Tiny times, a film directed by a popular young author named Guo Jingming in 2013, has gained a box-office success since its release on June 27. It describes a story of four girls who shared different values and life attitudes going through giant changed of friendship, love and even death. But it caused a surprising sensation of major media, including the government's flagship newspaper, the People's Daily. Published in the culture page of People’s Daily on Monday, July 15.2013, an article titled “Tiny Times and Big Times”, was written by a famous journalist of People’s Daily Liuqiong. She admitted that youth literature and films have their own style and audiences, but real writers, good writers, should write about the world as it is and ought to be careful about the impact that their works bring about. Public opinion, however, is sharply divided. Standing on the side of People’s Daily, most criticism has concentrated on the obvious materialism expressed by the protagonists, who seek satisfaction in luxury goods and the pursuit of capable men. At the same time, it is unanimously approved that the value orientations of Tiny Times lead to the vast teenager’s failure to distinguish between truth and falsehood. On the other hand, they quite agreed with People’s Daily’s words that social and love value of Tiny Times is inappropriate, for example money worship, and believed that it did have negative impact on teenagers fond of this film, and even appeal to everyone to insist the principles of upholding leadership by the Party. On the contrary, the voice of those who agreed that People’s Daily shouldn’t criticize Tiny Times has been getting louder.
