Comparison of the tone and mood of poems “Cross” and “Seed-Merchant’s Son” Poetries can represent poets’ emotions and feelings. In this essay I intend to compare and contrast the tone and mood of two poems, which called “Cross” by Langston Hughes and “Seed-Merchant’s Son” by Agnes Grozier Herbertson. “Cross” is about a half-blood person who blames his parents and later feels sorry of his parents and bemused of his life. "The Seed-Merchant's Son" is a poem that conveys the bereavement that a man feels for his son who has died at the war. Those two poems have some similarities and differences of tone and mood.
Paul ponders, “[f]our days left now. I must go and see Kemmerich’s mother [now]” (180). Baumer faces adversity by pulling himself together and informing Kemmerich’s mother on the news of her son’s death, resulting in the downfall of his esteem because of the injustice in his premature death. As Baumer’s esteem is weakened, the soldiers from Owen’s poem have high esteems due to the adversities they face. The soldiers from Wilfred Owen’s poem have solid esteem due to the fact that they are facing the hardships and challenges of assuming the role of combatants.
Steven Herrick’s free verse novel “By the River” displays the struggles of grief and loss that the characters endure as well as some effective coping mechanism they utilise. Various characters such as the protagonist, Harry and his father display the issues of grief and loss and clearly demonstrate ways in which they cope with it. Harry and his father cope through the death of their mother and wife in different ways. The protagonist has to deal with the loss of his close friend, Linda which turns out to be a great struggle but he manages to survive it. Loss can be felt through death as well as someone leaving your life.
Both poems present grief and the harsh reality of losing a loved one but in different ways. In “Mid-Term Break,” we see Heaney talking about the awkward ways in which people reacted to grief before mentioning at the end his honest feelings towards the death of his brother whereas Jonson in “On my first Sonne,” openly expresses his pain of losing his son. “On my first Sonne,” is a very emotional poem in which Jonson is saying goodbye to his dead son. The language in the poem is very telling and reveals Jonson’s grief. In the first three lines, Jonson is trying to come to terms with the loss of his son.
His father died shortly after and Poe suffered greatly during his life not being able to claim to have “known” his parents. Poe did indeed gain another motherly figure, Francis Allen, who also ended up passing away early in his life. He also was faced with the challenge of losing his wife. Poe lost some of the most important people in a man’s life, the women they love. Out of the supplementary of works Poe had written, I personally had found his poem “The Raven” uniquely interesting because it closely expresses the devastation that Poe went through throughout his life.
Ana Briceno ] Love Without Barriers: Virginia is the Inspiration for Annabel Lee The poem “Annabel Lee,” by Edgar Allan Poe depicts a deep grief towards the death of his beloved wife and cousin, Virginia Clemm. Throughout the poem, the narrator expresses the melancholic emotions he suffered after the death of his beloved one, however the feelings towards her were so intense that not even death could separate them. Poe expresses, in his letters to his Aunt Maria Clemm and friend, George Eveleth, the passionate affection he had for his wife, Virginia, as being intense and eternal. The feelings that Poe expresses throughout his letters are the same feelings he expresses in his poem; therefore Virginia is the inspiration of this poem. Virginia suffered from tuberculosis and died in 1847, two years prior to the writing of Poe’s poem; her death caused Poe to enter a deep depression.
Poetry Explication of “The Raven” by Edgar Allen Poe “The Raven” is a poem written about a man who is grieving about his lost lover. He has great difficulty with dealing with her death and the object in the poem that is used continually to remind him of the lack of her presence is that of the raven. Starting with the first stanza, there is indication of in climate weather and it also tells us that the setting is at night. There is an air of uncertainness and a definite dark side to the poem with the uncovering of some great tragedy that has befallen the narrator and he also has a fear of something coming to disturb him at rest. We find more out about what this tragedy that befell him is and we discover that the supposed date of this unfortunate happening occurred in the month of December.

I think that both poems display a kind of shock or realisation at the loss of a parent. In Harmonium, Armitage presents the shock of a son at the realisation that one day his father will die. In Praise Song, Nicholsâ character realises she must come to terms with her motherâs death and move on. I think that Nichols is much more open about the love of the narrator for her mother, simply stating the importance, presenting a stereotypical mother and daughter relationship which is open and honest. Whereas, Armitage shows a son who finds it harder to describe his feelings for his father, and shows it by using an extended metaphor of a harmonium, in order to show the reader all the memories he has had because of his father, and how he loves him.
Basically talking about his lost love, self-torture and about being consumed by his past. To me I think writing was Poe’s way of coping with his wife death ,because it provided him with his own insane characters with similar pain for him to deal with, as opposed to detraction from his own pain so that he could come with these much the same with his on life. The poem setting seems like it’s midnight in a dark room where the protagonist wife has past away and he is in a terrible sate of grief and misery and all he wants is to bring her back, but he can’t, and he knows this. Then with doubt and fear he locks himself up inside this dark room, filled with darkness and hopelessness in the middle of the night and while he’s alone by himself, he hears the raven who I thinks is his subconscious also death. He wants the raven to deliver Lenore to him or show him to her, but the raven only mocks him seems like and shows’ him how no one waits for you after death, you are all by yourself.
