William Faulkner explores Emily Grierson’s life by starting and ending with her death. Instead of telling her story chronologically he tells important tidbits in by breaking up the story into five parts, each one set at a different time in her life. The plot of “A Rose for Emily” focuses heavily on death and loss. Each of the five parts bears some mention of Emily’s loss and this constant reiteration helps the reader to feel some of Emily’s grief. First she loses her father, his death is mentioned throughout the story, then she loses the support of the town, eventually she loses her love and finally she loses her life.
“I feel that this award was not made to me as a man but to my work.” (Faulkner, pg 1) This excerpt from his speech shows the readers that Faulkner does use his emotions to write his books. One of Faulkner’s characters named Vardaman, an 8 year old boy, shows great love for his mother. The loss of his mother affected him very badly in which he began to “vomit the crying.” (AILD, pg 54) In meaning that the death of his mother made him cry so badly he was unable to stop crying. His compassion for his mother is very strong. With the love and compassion Vardaman has for his mother shows that he has tremendous respect for his mother.

Session 1: My first session with Hamlet was a troubling one; he came to me with many concerns. Just two months ago, his father died. Now, his mother, Gertrude, is remarrying to his uncle, Claudius. When asked how he feels about the marriage of his mother and uncle, and how he is dealing with the grief from the loss of his father, Hamlet responded with, “Not so… I am i’ the sun.” (1.2.71) His sarcastic remark denotes feelings of betrayal by his mother and uncle who are so readily able to replace his father. This remark also implies that that he is still mourning the loss of his father and is not yet ready to move on.
The Vacuum Love is a very important emotion and feeling in a persons’ life, specially the love of family and the soul mate. If we lose a family member or our life partner, then it hurts us and we cannot get rid of the moments we had spent with that person. This poem “The Vacuum” is driven by the same emotions and feelings that Howard Nemerov felt for his beloved. The poem mainly keeps revolving around the grief and sorrow of the poet who has lost his wife and is missing her badly. It centralizes on the loneliness of the poet.
Language Techniques, rhythm and rhyme are used throughout this song. My response to this song is that the song describes the emotions and feelings of someone who is struggling to find their identity because of the influences of other people on their life decisions and choices. This has showed me one aspect of how ones identity is influenced and affected. ________________________________________ My second text chosen was a photograph; from a project called breathe by Christopher Ireland. This photograph is about the sadness and the depression of a widowed woman, whose husband died from asbestos disease.
The author, Robert Newton, uses narrative techniques and conventions to represent the impact of poverty on a growing teenager during this time period In the novel, Runner, the author used symbolism to describe the physical damages to Charlies life caused by poverty. The death of Charlie’s father eventuates into Charlie having to accept the responsibility of his family. This responsibility is symbolised by ‘the long pants of adulthood’: ‘It was quick, my father’s death. I had little time to prepare for the end. As soon as he took his last breath, Ma and I were forced to think of the future.
“The Story of an Hour” describes the series of emotions Louise Mallard is feeling after hearing of the death of her husband, who she believes has died in a railroad disaster. “The Story of an Hour” follows Mrs. Louise Mallard and an hour of her life, during which her husband has died in a railroad accident.
