MU 10 Additional Questions Session 10 What is meant by Cognitive distortions? How would you describe the skills required for developing and sustaining the counselling relationship? Cognitive distortions are irrational thought patterns that are thought to be responsible for anxiety and depression. Beck did a lot of work on Cognitive distortions and found there to be several common ones such as Filtering this is when a person takes either just the negatives or positives from an experience and then bases all future experiences on these aspects. For example “ I always get stressed when I have to work to a deadline” this person would associate the deadline with failure and would therefore avoid working to a deadline however if they inspected what had led them to fail on a particular project they would certainly see that the deadline had little to nothing to do with the failure.
I don’t like when I explode. Especially, when it’s a situation I cannot control. I have thoughts that maybe I am the problem. Sometimes I wonder if my temper is the problem or maybe I am jealous that I am not the one with the authority. However, these are my challenges that I am sure I have to work on to become to stronger.
Another weakness would be confidence, I know I am capable of doing the work but sometimes I doubt myself and my capabilities especially in the O.R. setting, I need to work on not allowing other individuals such as surgeons, reps, or nurses frazzle me to the point where I am not able to do my job like I am normally able to do. My first plan to improve my weakness of life interference I have already started to implement and the solution is to put myself in a better situation work extremely hard pray and work harder and make better choices slow down and think before acting make logical decisions not ones based off of emotion only. A way to improve my confidence weakness is to treat the O.R. like any other x-ray scenario, make sure I am familiar with the equipment prior to going into surgery and get familiar with the types of surgeries I will be doing.
Stringer “It is difficult to understand why people often suffer deep-seated feelings of frustration. They feel that the centrally controlled programs and services they must institute cannot take into account the multitude of factors that impinge on people’s lives” (pg.22). It is almost impossible to predict or control human behavior(s). Trained professionals have to control their desire to “react” to a situation. Stringer “Policies and programs should not dictate specific actions and procedures but instead should provide the resources to enable effective action that is appropriate to particular places” (pg.3).
Also, I think the sixth step related to the evaluation of decisions is also very important and one that I personally struggled sometimes to implement in fact, at times I found myself implementing a decision but never followed through to evaluate if my decision did provide the desired impact and resolved the problem identified in step one. In my professional career I am always facing the need to diagnose and solve problems and the six stages of decision making have given me an opportunity to better understand how I can deploy a consistent method that will allow me to identify an issue, brainstorm potential alternatives, implement the best possible option and then create a feedback system that will allow me to gauge the effectiveness of my decision. This process can also be deployed in a team setting environment in fact I recently faced an issue at work and called a team meeting to discuss action items. During our meeting I followed the six stages of decision making and we were able not only to clearly define the issue at
Whether the actions are good or bad, follow it and learn from it. After all, no one is perfect and everyone learns from their mistakes. Life is a meaningless state where we stay in doubt and dont listen to our certainty. We continue to let someone influence our way of thinking and well being, instead of doing our own activities from within ourselves. Everything we have done has not been proven to be right or wrong, but it does not mean that it cannot be proven.
Self-Disclosure Reflective Essay: Speech 1 Speaking in public isn’t something I am good at, I would either mess up a couple of times or I would just read straight off my script. While looking at the video that was recorded of me delivering my speech, I notice all of my weaknesses and my strengths. While watching the video it made me realize what I should of have done better to deliver a good speech. When I was delivering my self-disclosure speech, I was having trouble pronouncing some words correctly. I was nervous and I didn’t have speaking points so I just decided to read directly from my script.
When I give myself too much work to do and not slow down I end up stressing myself out because it is hard to finish the task by a certain time cause of having so many jobs going on at the one time. And sometimes I can get angry cause of all the pressure to get the job done. 3. How would you like to respond (What would you change about how you think, feel or act in that situation)? What is your goal?
Assumptions should play no part in critical thinking but unfortunately they do, and often. I know as humans we all make snap judgments, but the idea is to push aside our assumptions and judgments when we think critically. Thinking critically is a skill that you either have or you don’t, the ones who have it will ultimately be the ones to thrive in their respective fields. Though it may be difficult to avoid making assumptions, as professionals we have no choice. We can keep our assumptions to ourselves but unless we consider all aspects of the situation we are not thinking critically.
The majority of us struggle with completing the challenges we set ourselves and sabotage our efforts. Why do people for example abandon their new year’s resolution weeks or sometimes even days after they have agreed they would stick to them? And why do some people with similar backgrounds or education do better than others? A lot of it goes down to the way we are brought up, in other words the programming we received from our parents and society and which gets stored in our subconscious mind. Every time our conscious mind is getting some new information that is different from the one which is already stored it is very critical towards it and rejects it straight away.
