Give a broad critical appraisal of School of Paris painting with the years 1910-1945, establishing contexts and referring to appropriate painters and works. Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944) and Franz Marc (1880-1916) predicted a colossal change in the arts; a great upheaval that would radically challenge traditional artistic presentation. This prodigious creativity and innovation symbolised the years leading up to World War I. European cities were evolving, and the artistic avant-garde had adapted and responded to twentieth century modernity. Cubism achieved recognition in Paris, sparking new directions in the Netherlands, and Russia. The Great Upheaval illuminates how artists hurtled toward a new discovery, abstraction and the ultimate “great upheaval” of a catastrophic war. It also highlights the masterpieces of modern art. There are two opposing historic images of the Depression in 1930s: poverty - lines of broken, unemployed men, rows of shabby housing - and prosperity - new washing machines, automobiles, electricity and cinemas.
During 1910-1945 an extraordinary amount of historical events arose. All these different events each had a role and influence in the art over the 35 years. The impact of World War I delivered two responses. From the movement, Abstraction had created a desire for order and a Universal language. Quickly following this appeared the movement Surrealism which was a development from Dada (1916-1923). There was much development of science and technology; for example the development of cars, the development of wireless broadcasts, and the assembly lines and mass production, social changes like the Rise of Fascism and Communism, the Great Depression (1929-1939), and the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939).
