Research Paper: The Great Depression LIB 316 Historical Contexts & Literature The Depression touched every part of economic life and every area of societal life. The Depression produced significant traditional values and goals and became the molding force of the America we live in today. October 29, 1929 was one of the most memorable days on record. It marked the largest crash in the stock market chronicles, and the beginning of the Great Depression that lasted nearly a decade. The stock market crash was the turning point in causing the Great Depression; it was not its only source (McQuarrie, 2009).
Cubism came about during the early part of the twentieth century and Pop Art came during the late 1950’s. The Cubist movement began in Paris where there was an artistic environment. To depict the world in a new way, artists devised innovative technical methods in painting. The world events and exciting new technological inventions including the production of the car and the first airplanes drastically changed the lives of ordinary people. The advent of the motion picture also occurred during this time period.
Prompt 4: Analyze artistic and literary responses to industrialization over the course of the nineteenth century. The Industrial Revolution of the late 18th century and throughout the 19th century had a dramatic impact and influence on European life. While many aspects of life and society changed in response to these new developments, art and literature were heavily impacted as well. Three major forms of artistic responses to industrialization were Romanticism, Realism, and several new revolutionary styles of and made in reaction to the invention of the camera. All of these various styles responded to the industrialization of Europe in their own unique fashions, and resulted in a strange conglomeration of art, ideals, and themes.

The rise of labor organizations resulted from the growth of industry in the 1920s and the devastating effects of the Great Depression in the 1930s (Labor Unions Rise, 2011). Unions had been present since the 1800 but they were not officially acknowledged by the government. The first organized union was the United Automobile Workers of America in 1935 by the automobile workers. Unemployment was high and employers took advantage of the employees during desperate like times of the Great Depression. Workers were paid low wages, were forced to perform in unsafe working conditions, and lack of job security caused the workers to form unions.

Britain, in the eighteenth century, was a country undergoing many great radical changes and reforms. Innovation and progress in the fields of science and mathematics at the time, were leading onto great, consequent, leaps in other socially important areas too, most notably; in mechanisation and transportation, bringing Britain to the forefront of the industrial revolution. Such progress at this time evoked a great new age in travel, not only across Britain, but also the rest of the continent, and beyond. Such developments opened up many new avenues of exploration, and historians were finally able to compile accurate chronologies of European history and antiquarians were finally able to compile accurate studies of the classical past, including the styles and innovative developments in architecture and design.
Age of Invention: The Moving Picture During the late 1800s and early 1900s inventions of great magnitude began to shape the culture and arts of humanity to what it has become today. Inventions such as the automobile, airplane, steam engine, moving pictures, assembly line, and the discovery of the atom plus many more, shaped nearly every aspect of our modern world. Through the development of moving pictures one can see the influences it has created on culture and art during the early 1900s through present day. With the invention of moving pictures, new works of art including the film, The Birth of a Nation witch introduced a new style to watching film, a book; The Spoilers which was one of the first novels to be made into a movie and in the visual arts a picture called The Animated painting by Edwin s. Porter in 1904. Films during the early years, where called one reelers lasting 10 to 15 minutes.
