11/28/12 “The U.S’s role from the American Century to present day” As the United States faced the Great Depression beginning in the 1930s, civilians faced substantial food deprivation and economic stagnation, but soon a war that would help propel the United States to become the leading superpower would have been considered lunacy during the Great Depression era. In the last few years, the American Century seems to be declining. The recession that started in 2007 is undermining American hyper power status. The rise of China’s political and economic status is crucial towards the global economy and its correlation with the U.S’s debt ceiling. When Henry Luce first coined the phrase “The American Century”, he had envisioned the United States being the global leader who would spread democracy and become the world’s strongest economy. The American Century built a completely new era of economic order. Globalization and Americanization soon became accentuated in the world’s economy with similarities between American consumers and other nation’s consumers. Americanization is put in terms with Globalization through the adaption of capitalism and mass consumerism globally. The majority of Western Europe and Japan were allured to America’s consumerist economy. These dramatic changes and the globalization of American corporations signaled the “Americanization” of the world. The term ‘Glocalization” became a term that showed a marketing strategy by American entrepreneurs for specific areas. The world doesn’t have an absence of leadership but it isn’t led by an omnipotent force such as America in the mid to late 20th century. From LaFeber's accounts of the the American Century was illusions of grandeur, from the countless ant-communist interventions and loss of an immense amount of money show that the highly praised "American Century" wasn't all it was lived to be. A multinational world has formed with strong nations on both hemispheres. Deng Xiaoping transitioned China’s socialist economy into an effective capitalist economy while keeping it politically communist. The way China’s political leaders reacted in Tiananmen Square shows its firm grip on its political policies. Evolving into East Asia’s hegemon and slowly rising to the world’s top grossing economy, China has built a stable and exponentially increasing economy. America’s hyper power days have been well over considering the 2007 recession, immense debt to China, and its yearly mandated increase of America’s debt ceiling. China’s capitalism is different to America’s in terms of its heavy reliance on state-owned enterprises and its quick investment on physical infrastructure.
