Soon, Kirkland became a favorite of Balanchine who went on to choreograph a production of his 1949 Firebird for her. Balanchine became sort of like a father figure to her, but when he belittled her ballet idols such as Rudolph Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn they had a falling out and quit speaking. In 1970, Kirkland was promoted to soloist and then principal dancer in 1972. While in the New York City Ballet she performed a variety of leading roles in their repertory, including Concerto Barocco, The Cage, Irish Fantasy, Symphony in C, La Source, Theme and Variations, Tarantella, Harlequinade, The Nutcracker and Dances at a Gathering. In 1974, Kirkland was asked by Mikhail Baryshnikov to join him as a principal dancer at the American Ballet Theater (ABT).

The dance school had great success which led her on to many successful years of dancing and choreographing. Dunham passed away on May 26th 2009, one month before her 96th birthday. Dunham was a legendary dancer who impelled the appreciation and recognition of the African culture through her choreography. There is a Katherine Dunham museum in St Louis which includes over 250 pieces of Caribbean and African art objects from over 50 countries. The museum showcases photographs, awards, letters and mementos from Dunham’s career as a choreographer, dancer, teacher and dance company owner.
“Phoebe In Wonderland” is a movie, family drama that was released in the year 2008. It tells a story of a nine year old girl, Phoebe Lichten, wanting to play Alice in her school’s play “Alice in Wonderland”, directed by Miss Dodger. Phoebe does an excellent job on stage, relaxed and happy, feeling like she’s in a different world. But when she is offstage, she has an impulsive speech and an odd insecure behavior. Having worries, her parents take her to a therapist.
She later changed her name to Fanny Brice and got her first professional job in the chorus of The Talk of the Town but ironicely she got fired during rehearsals by the big current star George M. Cohen. Young Fanny was a strong fighter and didn't give up her dream of entertaining. She then finally landed a spot in The Trans-atlantic Burlesquers where she did an Irving Berlin song, "Sadie Salome, Go Home." She did this in a Yiddish dialect seeing that she looked the way she did. Although she was not Jewish, she quoted " In anything Jewish I ever did, I wasn't standing apart making fun.
This stroke changed her, she went on to write a book called Reprieve, where she explained her setbacks from not being able to continue as much as she wanted too. After completing that book she wrote four more. Where the Wings Grow, America Dances, Portrait Gallery, and her last called Martha: The Life and Work of Martha Graham. She was a very close friend with legend dancer and choreographer Martha Graham and wrote a biography about her that she worked on for thirty years. “Recitatif” Summary “Recitatif” is a short story about racial real life racial issues between the two main character’s Twyla and Roberta. The interesting part about this story is that we never really find out who is black and who is white. The short story is broken into 5 separate parts, or encounters of when Twyla and Roberta interact with each other throughout their lifetime. The first encounter takes places when the two girls are dropped off at St. Bonny’s because both girls have been taken away from their mother. Twyla, the narrator, tells us that her mother is a dancer and we find out that Roberta’s mother is sick.
On the other hand Hannah is a devoted young 15 year old, who appears to be very mature and eager to please. At the age of 14, Hannah moves in with her aunt to devote all of her time into becoming a pianist. Her aunt was happy with her move, and continued to teach Hannah. But later on, Hannah became annoyed with her aunt’s rules and breaks them. After her aunt kicks her out of her house, Hannah began to cry and says “Don’t make me go, Tante Rose” (Horton 39).
As a child she would work alongside her mother as a maid. When Frankie grows up she moves to Los Angeles and works for at a go-go club as an exotic dancer. In the film, Frankie also suffers from amnesia. On numerous occasions she forgets who she is with and what they are doing together. Frankie passes out in the middle of the street one night and is taking to a hospital.
Miss Lacy, Clayton Forrest’s secretary was appalled at the thought of a white girl staying with black women, referring to August as her. “‘I’m just saying it’s not natural, that you shouldn’t be ...well, lowering yourself’” (p. 198). Lily’s encounters with racism towards herself from black people and from white people as well, complicate Lily’s life. However, because of these experiences or external factors, Lily is forced to analyze her feelings towards them. By doing this, she is able to recognize her hatred and disgust for racism.
