Erin Weinberger Theater Fundamentals October 22, 2010 Agnes de Mille Agnes de Mille was born in New York, New York in 1905 to the parents of William C. deMille who was a playwright and soon to be Hollywood director and Anna George, the daughter of a well known economist in New York. When she was still young her family moved to Hollywood to become part of the business there. Because Agnes was still a child she attended a Hollywood school for girls. Then went on to graduate from University of California at Los Angeles being part of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. In 1932 she then moved back to New York when her parents divorced and started choreographing dance numbers to perform. Her first ballet was called Black Ritual. It was the first ballet to be performed with black people. It didn't sell but she then went to choreograph a ballet called Three Virgins and the Devil. This was a huge hit and is still performed today. DeMill was only part of the American Ballet Theater for so long though. In 1942 she was picked up by The Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo where she choreographed her first huge great big success, Rodeo. She played the lead and received amazing reviews. This stroke changed her, she went on to write a book called Reprieve, where she explained her setbacks from not being able to continue as much as she wanted too. After completing that book she wrote four more. Where the Wings Grow, America Dances, Portrait Gallery, and her last called Martha: The Life and Work of Martha Graham. She was a very close friend with legend dancer and choreographer Martha Graham and wrote a biography about her that she worked on for thirty years.
