Batman Begins In 2005 Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins, the first movie in his new Batman trilogy, was release into theaters. In his movie, Gotham City is being driven into chaos by rampant crime, leaving Batman alone to stand up against evil and for the citizens of his city. Though he is a lone wolf, Batman is not the only one that seeks to restore justice to the crippling city. Much like the Dark Knight, a secret organization known as the League of Shadow also wishes to cleanse the city of its impurities. Although the two share many similarities they have different plans to fulfilling their ultimate goals. Justice, one of the major themes in the movie, can be better understood in Nolan’s work by analyzing some of the main characters in the story such as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Rachel Dawes and Ra’s Al Ghul. Justice is ultimately that which both the protagonists and the antagonist are striving to achieve. In this case, justice is the cleansing of Gotham city from corruption and crime of the mafia that has taken control of the city streets and stricken fear among its people. While Rachel’s desire for justice stems from her morals and belief in the legal system, the other character’s thirst for justice derives from a longing to fulfill vengeance for a past wrongdoing that was done to them. As a child, Bruce Wayne first handedly saw his parent’s murder and in a way his fear of bats was the cause of it. Growing up as an orphan leaves Bruce scarred or rather empty in a sense. He is empty because the only thing that would make him whole once again is his parent’s murderer is brought to justice; though he would much rather see the man’s life ended. Eventually the man is assassinated upon his release just as the young Mr. Wayne was about to bring about his revenge.
