Development, unity, and coherence create paragraphs and essays with a strong point and clear reasoning. The first element, development, helps the writer elaborate on the basic idea of his paragraph. The four steps in development are basic idea, explain, evidence, and interpret. The basic idea is the point the writer would like to make in the paragraph. This is the very first part of the paragraph because it is where the writer identifies the subject he will be writing on.
