Rent, presented at the John Anthony Theatre on the CCCCD Spring Creek Campus, in Plano, Texas is a noble replica of the original Rent play broadcasted in New York and illustrated by film. I attended the play on Sunday, March 6, 2011. Seated directly in the 5th row, front and center, my close proximity to the stage was clear and precise. With my positioning, I was able to have a full view of each of the scenes and direct access to all of the action. The proscenium theatre that hosted the play provided an elaborate sound forum and view of each of the intricate scenes of the play. I personally felt engaged in the unfolding of the play’s essential story. When the musical Rent first appeared off Broadway in 1996, it instantaneously became a hit.…show more content…
Larson places his play in New York City , approximately one hundred years later than Puccini's work. It opens on the night before Christmas and accounts the characters' lives over the course of one year. The fast-paced production travels through a pool of vignettes that are united by a rent strike against the landlord of the run-down high-rise where some of the characters live. Throughout the course of the play, the characters gripe and protest against the landlord's plans to evict them and face other tribulations that are far more challenging to fight, including drug addiction, AIDS, and troubled relationships. The spaces engaged by the hip-clad young actors are loosely illustrated by a trio of tables, a couple of pay phones, and some upper level balconies. The stage is further narrowed by a large junkyard sculpture on one side and the band on the other. The cast members use the set as their playground, jumping and running all over the place as if in a rock concert, adding further energy and excitement to the production. Both the director and choreographer make sure that the pace keeps thrashing into the hearts of the audience, cleverly preventing the audience from reflecting too much on the actual
