The FDA did not actually receive its current name until 1930 but it actually regulatory functions started in 1906 with the passage of the Pure Food and Drugs Act, which prohibited interstate commerce in adulterated and misbranded food and drugs. The government regulatory agency known as Federal Drug Administration or FDA is an agency within the Department of Health and Human Services. This organization is made up of the Office of the Commissioner and four other directorates that oversee the core function within the agency, which are Medical Products and Tobacco, Foods, Global Regulatory Operations and Policy, and Operations ("U.S. Food and Drug Administration", 2015). The Office of the Commissioner is the leadership of the agency’s scientific activities, communication, legislative liaison, policy and planning, women’s and minority health initiatives, agency operations, and toxicological research(“U.S. Food and Drug Administration”,2015). One of the other office within the organization are the Office of Food and Veterinary Medicine which deals with food and feed safety, nutrition, and other critical areas to achieve public health goals. Another office is the Office of Operations which is there to provide agency services like information technology, financial management, procurement, library services, and freedom of information, FDA history, and facilities. The role of the Federal Drug Administration mainly the most important one is to make sure to uphold all the laws issued by the government with concerns with the products that include drugs, medical products, food, and other non-health related products while also protecting and promoting public health within the nation.
