Reflective Journal

This week in clinical before the start of my shift, I discussed the goals that I wanted to achieve with my preceptor. My first goal was to have my own patient assignment with minimal help from my preceptor. Also, I needed to perform all the charting on my patient and plan the care for the day. My rationale for this week’s goals is that having my own patient will help me to learn the whole nursing process. In addition, I will learn how to work as a critical care registered nurse. Prior to this clinical week, I was afraid of having a patient assigned to me, but I have overcome this fear. I want to learn and be able to provide patient care and distinguish any potential problems my patient may be having. Furthermore, I want to be able to communicate with the doctors, family, and other members of the healthcare team about my patient. This will enable me to become a well- rounded nurse. As I sit back and reflect on this past week clinical experience without a doubt, I feel pleased with my performance this past week. I’m satisfied because I took care of my patient with minimal assistance from my preceptor. My patient assignment was a patient that was post coronary arterial bypass graft (CABG). Coronary artery bypass surgery is a procedure that restores blood flow to your heart muscle by diverting the flow of blood around a section of blocked artery in your heart. Coronary bypass surgery uses healthy blood vessels taken from your leg, arm, chest, or abdomen and connects to other arteries in your heart, so that blood is bypassed around the diseased or block artery. Coronary bypass surgery improves symptoms such as chest pain and shortness of breath due to poor blood flow to the heart (2013, Mayoclinic).
