Reflection Paper 1- Gender Studies Summary of Chapter 1 – The Study of Gender, Gender Psychological Perspective by Linda Brannon Summary of Chapter 1 - Gender Psychological Perspective by Linda Brannon Brannon (2011), in her book, Gender: Psychological Perspectives, in Chapter 1, “The Study of Gender,” examines the issue of gender focusing on attitudes and behaviors related to biological sex. Both the book and this chapter, in particular, is a scholarly work on the psychological perspectives of gender presenting significant and profound material for critical review. The goal of the book in general is to demonstrate the interconnection of the ideas on biological sex and human behavior by using gender factor depicting the relationships between women and men. Brannon (2011) presenting her material, which is also based on her personal life demonstrates clear influence of cultural diversity on human sexual relationships. This is the overall theme that is present in the whole book, and highlighted in this chapter. She argues that gender equity is a strong determinant of quality of life (Brannon, 2011). However, history of gender tells us that gender equity is a very complex issue and is not an easy task to accomplish without a continuous visionary work. In this chapter, the author covers both general research history of sex differences in psychology, and proceeds further with the study of individual differences; the elements of psychoanalysis are depicted there as well (Brannon, 2011). Special attention is also paid to the terminology of sex (biologically determined differences) or gender (socially determined differences) with the development of women’s studies and the place of women in psychology. At the same time, we can also observe the appearance of the men’s movement as well, which has always been diverse
