Pompeii Sivanithursan Vettivel Pompeii, once a great roman city, now a tourist site frozen in time by the ashes of mount Vesuvius. The fate of Pompeii was sealed in a matter of days. It began with the eruption of mount Vesuvius on late August of 79 AD. This was followed up by 1.5 million tons of volcanic ash and rocks per second which piled up on top of the city and killed thousands. Now Pompeii is a time capsule and a tourist cite. Stuck in time, holding the memories of its former glory. Pompeii was Originally settled around the 7th century BC. Due to the earlier eruptions of mount Vesuvius there was lots of rich volcanic soil and this let the people grow lots of crops. Today visitors come from all across the glob to see the remains of Pompeii. Despite being 2000 years old, the streets and buildings give a sharp picture of what life was like many centuries ago. Several large houses belonging to merchants and other important residents can be seen. Many of the houses have stunning fresco's on their walls ceiling. The fresco's usually have images of important people or sexual content. The roads are still intact and prints from wagons can be still seen. “In Pompeii all is original: the tombs along the stone paved streets; the houses, with their frescoes - some with simple designs and gaudy colors, others more elegant and complex - which open onto shadowed arcades made precious by gardens in bloom and gushing fountains” (Salvatore, 2011, para.18). Pompeii is visited by 2.5 million people annually, making it one of Italy's most popular attractions. People from all across the world come to see this beautiful architectural site for many reasons.
