The nunnery, monastery and the community around it grew bigger and bigger. In Norman times a new stronger abbey was built and was designed as a convent on what used to be Anglo-Saxon land. The abbey was designed by Henry Blois who was Bishop of Winchester and Abbot of Glastonbury. Henry was the younger brother of King Stephen. Henry’s structure is still part of Romsey today. After this in 1240 AD around 100 nuns lived in the community. The abbey grew and grew until The Black Death hit the village in 1348 and around 50% died which is about 1000 people and over 80% of the nuns died too only leaving only 19 nuns in the community. At this point Romsey Abbey struggled and to reform the abbey it was finally taken over by Henry VIII in 1539 the time of the dissolution of monasteries. On the other hand the abbey didn’t suffer as much as other abbeys as it wasn’t demolished because it had section of the abbey dedicated to St Laurence it was also a regularly used church and was practically a Romsey Abbey in it’s former glory built into the perfect community church inside a church.
