Homelessness is a big issue in the United States. Los Angeles, California is one of the biggest cities in this country, and has the largest population of homeless people. According to the Institute for the Study of Homelessness and Poverty at the Weingart Center, an estimated 254,000 men, women and children experience homelessness in Los Angeles County during some part of the year and approximately 82,000 people are homeless on any given night. In Los Angeles, the average age for homeless people is 40- women are typically younger. 20% are physically disabled.
Who are the homeless? The Armed Forces represent a large portion of the homeless population in America (roughly 20-25%). Most people don’t consider the factors that contribute to homelessness such as mental illness or armed forces veterans suffering from their own trauma etc. Far too many veterans are homeless in the united state a number that staggers around 130,000 to 200,000 on any given day representing between one fourth and one fifth of all homeless (National Coalition for the Homeless, 2007). Why negative stereotypes have been created for the homeless?
On a yearly basis, 12 million black men and women cycle in and out of nearly 3500 jails and prison (McKinnon & Bennett, 2005). In 2008, 785,556 individuals were incarcerated at midyear, up from an average of daily population of 403,000 in 1990. Of the 2008 population, 42.5% were white men and 39% were black men, even though of the total U.S. population only about 6% were black men while 28% were white men (McKinnon & Bennett, 2005). Socio-economic status is a major factor in recidivism among the homeless mentally ill population (Solomon and Draine, 1995). Many mentally ill ex-offenders have limited resources prior to going to prison and upon release.
According to the defense lawyer Johnnie Cochran, Simpson had never left his house that night and that he was alone in his house packing to travel to Chicago. Cochran claims that Simpson went outside to hit a few golf balls into the children's sandbox in the front garden, one or more of which made the three loud thumps on the wall of Kaelin's bungalow. Cochran produced a potential alibi witness, Rosa Lopez, a neighbor's Spanish-speaking housekeeper who testified that she had seen Simpson's car parked outside his house at the time of the murders. But Lopez's testimony, which was not presented to the jury, was pulled apart under intense cross-examination, when she was forced to admit that she could not be sure of the precise time she saw Simpson's white Bronco outside his house. Ms. Lopez was interviewed in English, without an interpreter present.
As a result, during a typical year, between 900,000 and 1.4 million children are homeless with their families. Annual homelessness figures exceed 1 percent of the total U.S. population and may represent as much as 10 percent of all poor people in this country. Even though many of these people are homeless for only
The criminal system is supposed to be justice, but as we see it is very injustice. (www.racismreview.com) Across 34 of the 50 states, a black man is 11.8 times more likely than a white man to be sent to prison on drug charges and a black woman is 4.8 times more likely than a white woman. (www.racismreview.com) Their 10 states with the greatest racial disparities for drug offenders are Wisconsin, Illinois, New York, Maryland, West Virginia, Colorado, New Jersey, Virginia, Pennsylvania and Michigan. Arresting a lot of black Americans has not ended street corner drug sales. When someone gets arrested there is someone to take their place.
Anthony Salari Mrs. Campbell English 101 21 September 2014 Charles and the Pop-Up Tent At eight years old, I knew almost nothing about homeless people, and cared even less. Scary and dangerous was probably the only thoughts I’d ever had on the subject of homelessness. Then one day an old man sat on the side of the road in the rain changed everything for me. Charles was his name, and he liked my dog. He didn’t complain about being wet, but he also happily accepted the bright orange pop-up tent that I pulled out of our camping supplies and delivered to his street corner.
and 2003, the overall rate in Nevada With 19.1 suicides per 100,000 residents in 2000, Nevada rate was almost twice the National average of 10.7. Between 1993 and 2003, the overall rate in Nevada steadily declined from 25.8 to 18.5, but remained about twice the national
The median household income in Detroit dropped from $29,526 in 2000 to $26,098 in 2009. It was only a year later that it dropped again to $25,787. In 2010, the mean income fell below the US average by thousands. Every 1 in 3 residents in the city of Detroit is in poverty. Detroit reported more burglaries in 2010 than 2012.
In addition, it is believed that as many as half of all burglaries go unreported, which might account for the low clearance average clearance rate of 14 % in the U.S. A significant factor related to the low clearance rate is that about 65 percent of residential burglaries investigated do not produce enough evidence or information about the crime, therefore making it one of the most difficult crimes to solve (Weisel, 2004, p. 1). The official rate of residential burglary, as measured by the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report (UCR) has changed dramatically over the last 50 years. Burglary rates increased in the United
