Personal Perception of Organized Crime The perception of organized crime is different for many individuals. This could be because what is watched on television, or media portrayal of organized crime that has taken place in the past. The writer will analyze their perceived perception of organized crime, and compare to the definitions that were discussed within the reading. Characteristics that may be associated with organized criminal behavior will too be discussed. Personal Definition of Organized Crime Organized crime consists of a group of individual’s that involve him or herself in criminal behavior. This criminal behavior can consist of selling goods and services. These goods and services are sold illegally and received illegally. The services sold may be drugs, prostitution, weapons, or money. The money does have to be repaid in most circumstances, but those who receive money from individuals involved in organized crime usually pay a high interest rate. Most of these perceptions come from Mafia based programs on television. The Sopranos seem to display the organized crime outfit. Violence is a large factor, and many individuals get hurt including the members of the Mafia family. The shows like gangland that dictate documentaries on gangs seem to display certain types of organized crime. Profit and goods is the goal for those involved in organized crime. The Readings Definition of Organized Crime Organized crime has different definitions throughout history. During the Hoover era there was instances that some did not believe that organized crime existed (Lyman & Potter, 2007). This was proved to be untrue, but organized crime has taken on different attributes throughout the years (Lyman & Potter, 2007). It was believed that organized crime consisted of one group. These groups were Italian or Sicilian individual’s that committed certain crimes in return for
