A Case Study on Perfect Pizza February 20, 2011 Problem / Issue Statement The problem that exists at Perfect Pizzeria is the negative cultural condition of the restaurant between employees and the manager of the restaurant. Negative Cultural Condition The manager of Perfect Pizzeria has taken draconian steps that have created a rift between him and the employees of the restaurant. The steps have included changing and removing employee benefits without warning, a lack of communication with employees to increase engagement, and threats by the manager which included the use of a lie detector test if key measurements of the restaurant did not improve. The rift has created an environment where the employees have displayed a lack of loyalty to the success of the organization as measured by the last month’s unsold/damage food percentage, an important measurement for the manager, which reached an all time high. This is an immediate problem for the franchise as this is negatively affecting the morale of the employees and is in conflict with the strategic direction of the organization (i.e. reduce unsold/damage food percentage to drive profitability). Data Analysis There are several different situations that have to be analyzed for this case. They are broken down in to two major categories: leadership of the manager and internal structure. Leadership of the Manager How Did the Issue Arise? The manager of the Perfect Pizza store had several examples of poor leadership while managing the restaurant. This may be due to the lack of systematic criteria for becoming a manager within the Perfect Pizza franchise to include no college education required and no formal training. Despite the lack of formal training, the manager of the restaurant has a results oriented management style that avoids how the results are achieved as long as the results are achieved.
