Task 3: Experiment The Absorbency of Paper Towels Date: 02/01/2013 Elizabeth Smith Problem: To identify which paper towel brand absorb the most. Purpose: This experiment is to see which of the value brands of paper towels absorb the most. My hypothesis is that the Bounty brand will be able to absorb more. I only say this because the paper is thicker and it is the most expensive. Literature review: I have chosen two online paper towel experiments. The first one is called The Paper Towel Experiment (Mr. Salsich, 2011). In this experiment their hypothesis was to see if the more expensive paper towels absorb more than the cheaper brands by folding them and inserting into water and using a stop watch. Their results were that all the paper towels absorb averagely. In the second experiment called Soggy Paper (Martyn Shuttleworth, 2008) they used four different paper towels to see which one soaked up the water more. They kept track by cutting them and watch how many they used to absorb the water. Their conclusion was that the store paper towel absorb the most out of the four paper towels. Experiment Design: This experiment consists of: Stop watch A dropper ( a medicine dropper ) A bowel of water Three different paper towel sheets ( Bounty, Dollar General Brand and Basic) I will use a stop watch to measure which absorb the fastest per seconds/minutes. I chose this design plan because it was the materials were easy to get to (the materials were in my own home) and it seem to be the easiest way to do this experiment. Experiment Steps: Layout the first paper towel Take the dropper and fill it up with water by dipping it into the bowel of water. Set your stop watch. Cut the paper towels in a square shape so that there are equal to length and width. Fill the bowl close to the brim Dip your dropper into the
