But it’s Just a Bottle of Water…. Part I— 1. Growing up in the south, my family never recycled and went through cases of bottled water weekly. My parents to this day continue to purchase bottled water, but they say they are recycling the bottles, so in their minds like many they are doing no harm. So the question comes down to, should Sally’s mom buy the bottled water? The answer is no! She could just as easy spend as much money on purchasing a water filter and reusable water bottle or aluminum bottle fill it up with tap or filter water. I think people get stuck in their ways of doing what is easier and it is comes down to laziness. It is much easier to grab a water bottle than take the time to fill up a water bottle from the Brita water filter or even the tap (which is my favorite)! There are several factors that Sally’s mother should think about before purchasing the bottled water. First, bottled water is no better for you than tap water. Despite what marketing ploys advertising companies use in efforts to scam you into buying the water it is no better for you and in some cases it can be worse (with the additives added to bottled water to improve the taste). Most big name water bottle brands are essentially filtered tap water (ref. 3). Another reason not to purchase bottled water is to save money. Vending machines can charge you up to $3.00 for a 20 ounce bottle of water that comes down to about 15 cents for each ounce of filtered tap water (ref. 1). Most municipal water cost less than 1 cent per gallon. In terms of prices vs. production cost, bottled water puts the oil business to shame. Despite the growing trend and high demand to recycle bottled water, 80% of plastic bottles are simply just thrown away (ref. 1).
