Essay outline: In the plays of “Othello” and “Antigone” the feminist prospective has been witnessed through out the play. The feminist prospective has been portrayed as a prejudice view. Within Othello and in Antigone, women are illustrated unfairly by their society and culture. In the plays women are seen negatively in different time period, prejudice beliefs, and lack of dependence. The treatment of women in both Antigone and Othello are affected by different timelines which in turn determines a woman’s social standing. In Antigone, the Jean Anouilh version based in 1944, and Othello, based in 1622, each have different expectations of a woman’s role. Women are historically treated differently and thus may create prejudice views. Women in the play also have been witnessed to be dependent on their attendants; this suggests to the audience the lack of reliance on women. In Antigone, women have specific roles within their society. Specifically when the Chorus explains the queen’s role within society, “She will go on knitting all through the play, till the time comes for her to go to her room and die. (Anouilh 11)” This message indicates to the audience that regardless of whether a woman has the social status of a queen, she still will have a relatively minor position in their civilization. Culture has a massive factor on women’s treatments over the centuries for instance in the early era’s of man, when men find out their wives are cheating on them, they must do the honorable thing and kill their wife because men are bound by nobility. This has been seen in Othello in act 5, scene 2, line 6 when Othello decides to kill Desdemona due to her “betrayal”. This act in the play of Othello illustrates that men can kill women, if they have justified reasons but in the present it is not morally correct to kill women for any reason, even if she did adultery.
