Professional Development of Nursing Professionals Tony Smith Grand Canyon University Professional Dynamics NRS-430V April 07, 2013 The Institute of Medicine of the National Academies was established in 1970 with the primary responsibility of identifying public health concerns. The Institute operates under a congressional charter advising the federal government on issues that it identifies, specifically medical care, research, and education. (IOM, 2010, p.xi) Although the nursing process brought a bounty of offering to the healthcare table, the IOM recognized that major improvements would have to be made. Specifically, to prepare the enlarging workforce of nursing, changes in scopes of practice, advances in education, improvements in the nursing continuum of care, and transformation in nursing leadership would have to be implemented. The IOM’s proactive nursing blueprint would extend to national, state, and local levels to transform necessary healthcare policies. (IOM, 2010, p. xii) This paper will focus on the impact of IOM’s report concerning nursing education, nursing practice in primary care, and the nurse’s role in leadership. Emphasis will also be made concerning how I would change my practice to reflect the goals of the IOM report. The IOM recognized that by enabling nurses to practice to the full extent of their education, training, and competency, healthcare would reap the benefits of higher quality service and increased safety. Primary care nursing is a standard practice in the intensive care unit, and by nature is a proponent of transformation. Patients benefit from the evolution of nurses obtaining higher levels of training and education. For example, a nurse in the intensive care unit through vigilance and training can affect incidence of ventilator acquired pneumonia and central venous catheter infections. Hospital induced delirium is a very expensive add-on to the cost of healthcare, but through early detection and treatment can be minimized by the bedside nurse. Essentially, if nursing performs at the peak of their training and education we can greatly impact in every area the goals of the IOM report. Strong leadership as reported by the IOM is critical to the success of a rapidly changing healthcare system. Nurses at the entry level of their career may not aspire to be leaders, but quickly realize an expanded role, which includes a partnership with the entire medical team. (IOM, 2010, pg.
