Project teams must to be effective in the following areas to improve their productivity goals. • Healthcare marketing personnel are responsible for targeting appropriate market segments, developing marketing strategies, and creating promotional campaigns. • Finance and administrative members often oversee concerns related to cost minimization and maintaining peak levels of efficiency and usage of the new service. • Finally, physicians, nurses, and members of ancillary support departments have an equally large stake in the success of a new hospital program.
Some feel that higher educated nurses are vital to meeting the demands of our ever changing healthcare needs. “A well-educated, highly-skilled, and diverse nurse workforce is critical to meeting future healthcare needs.” (Department of Health and Human Services [DHHS], 2011). Scientific studies have been conducted to support this parallel. Research shows that healthcare institutions with higher percentages of baccalaureate-prepared nurses benefit with better patient outcomes in addition to significantly lower mortality rates (American Association of Colleges of Nursing [AACN], 2012). This research resulted in the healthcare industry taking great strides to increase the number of baccalaureate-prepared nurses.
Advanced knowledge in individual patient care, understanding the essentials of person, environment, health and nursing profession and having the ability to apply the metaparadigms in daily practice, effectively improve nursing practice and patient outcomes. The goal for both degree level nurses is to provide quality care, however the BSN has a much broader knowledge base allowing for the care of more complex patients and a higher degree of autonomy in her role leading to better patient outcomes. A BSN’s leadership skills are far superior, opening the door to hold higher level positions within hospitals and community facilities. These major changes in nursing include the evolution from a task-based nurse to a role-based nurse, the modification of nursing uniforms, the adoption of infection control, the growing trend and acceptance of males in the profession, and the implementation of technology in field, among countless others.
Bringing together education and healing was a life-changing experience that made me realize that nursing is my true calling. Traditionally, nurses were viewed as caregivers. In today’s world, image of nursing profession changes as nurses play many other roles such as patient’s advocates, educators, managers, team members, facilitators, and experts. (Zerwekh, 2006). As I read the entries from my reflective journal, I could see how my focus shifted from assisting patient with his basic needs at the beginning of the nursing school to more comprehensive nursing care today.
I believe my calling is to the role of Advanced Nurse Practitioner. In this new role, I will be able to take on more responsibility, autonomy, and can potentially make a greater impact on patients’ lives. I believe it is our obligation as nurses to stay up to date on our ever evolving practice. As nursing leaders, we should take the initiative to be involved in councils, read nursing journals, and further our education as much as the glass ceiling will allow. A thirst for knowledge is wonderful value to have.
This calls for a change in the training processes for nurses. It is agreeable that nursing training has been undergoing several changes in the last years. Over the same period, the role of nursing has increased in some areas while reducing in others. Such changes have constantly been associated with the nursing profession, methods used in the selection of new nurses and the impacts when providing patient-based education in the traditional learning (Carr 122). The training process for nurses has been often affected by specific factors such as problems faced by teaching faculties, models used to training them, and the characteristics attributed to the career.
