“Nudity in Art” Is nudity acceptable, when it’s in the art? Generally, nudity in the art has conformed, with some variation, to social standards for public nudity. In cultures where nudity was accepted, nude figures in paintings and sculptures were as well. However, some cultures have tolerated artistic nudity more than actual nudity, with a different set of standards of what is acceptable. As social attitudes about artistic nudity have changed, this has sometimes led to conflict over art that no longer conforms to prevailing standards. I believe that nudity in the art is acceptable and should be tolerated. There are many articles, debates, and opinions on the subject of nudity in art. The social connotation of nudity in art is of vulnerability, sexuality, and invasiveness. This couldn't be further from the truth. The first article is titled “ Nudity in the Twentieth Century.” In this article Linda Swanson shows that the “nude” has become an enduring genre of representational art, especially in painting, sculpture, and photography. The second article is “The Art of Being Naked” by Marc Angler. In this article he explores the various forms of nudity in art ranging from painting to film. The last article is “The Social Context of Art” by Jean Creedy. Through is article Creedy demonstrates the social context to nudity in the art through various times in history and cultures. I will now show that nudity in the art is acceptable and should be tolerated using the three articles listed above. What these articles show is that when looking at the “nude” in a artistic form, you have to look at it from a certain context and cultural view. Also these articles explain that “nude” and “naked” have the same objective meaning and a common origin, but have differing subjective connotations in various artistic contexts. By
