Nigeria, a Federal Republic amoung the richest of in the south-east of the country, primarily populated by the Ibos people. Nigeria's Civil war also known as the Biafran War also known as the the Nigerian Civil war started on July 6, 1967 and continued on until January 15th 1970. Biafra, now known as the Republic of Biafra in south-eastern Nigeria was among the many causes for the Nigerian Civil War hence the name Nigerian-Biafran War. The Nigerian Civil war was a direct result of economic, ethnic, cultural and religious tensions among the various peoples of Nigeria. The Nigerian Civil War was fought to reintegrate and reunify the country. The war was between the then Eastern Region of Nigeria and the rest of the country. The Eastern Region declared itself an independent state which was regarded as an act of withdrawal by the Federal Military Government of Nigeria. As an attempt to holding the country together in the last result, the country was divided into twelve states from the original four regions in May 1967. Multiple meetings were held to resolve the issue peacefully, but without success. To avoid rapid deterioration of the country, the nations central government brought back the Region to the main fold by force. The Federalist hoped for a quick victory, but after almost two years of a bloody and destructive war. Towards end of April 1969, that was not so, the Biafrans were still holding on. Although more peace conferences were held none achieved end to the war. By the Christmas of 1969, the end of the civil war was near. After countless years of fighting the Commander of the Biafran Army surrendered to the Federal Government on 14th January 1970 bringing an end to the war.
