Introduction This project will focus on the communication environment of the New Gulf Coast Surgery Center in Ocean Springs, MS. The New Gulf Coast Surgery Center is an ambulatory surgery center. The center handles over thirty outpatient surgeries per day for six days a week. There are many procedures performed at the facility, but the main focus is on Gastroenterology. The facility has four Gastroenterologists who perform the procedures at the facility. The schedule is broken down to each surgeon has an assigned day and the owner usually operates two days with one of those days being Saturday. The communication characteristics of this surgical center include verbal and nonverbal communication. There are many different types of communication between professional-professional, professional-patient, and professional-family members. The center houses many different types of communication and the difference in the communication between the professionals is where the issues come into play. The significant attributes that affect the communication environment include the generational differences between the professionals. The additional issues that affect the communication environment are the control issues within the professional-professional relationships. There should have a specific set of rules set in place for the professionals to have peer to peer discussions about schedule changes that may take place because a doctor may have to start early because he needs to add additional patients to the schedule for the next day. The additional patients request should be communicated with the Medical Director first then with the scheduler.
