The Civil War was fought in 1861 and ended in 1865. The Civil War was fought between the Union states (Northern states) of the United States and the states of the Confederacy (Southern States). There were many causes of the civil war, including differences between northern and southern states on the idea of slavery, as well as trade, tariffs, and states rights. There has been an argument that the Civil War was the first modern war between many historians. Abraham Lincoln was the president during this time period. Many black men fought in this war. The Civil War was definitely the first modern war from the aspects of medicine, military, and mobilization factors. Medicine was one of the major reasons why the Civil War has been thought of as the first modern war. One of the many major medicine enhancements is the use of dog tags. Dog tags allowed people to identify soldiers who were hurt/killed in the war. This was a huge advancement because before this, no one would be able to identify the dead soldiers, and many families were left wondering if their loved one was alive or not. One major military enhancement is the Minie ball. The Minie Ball was very effective, and very powerful. It could kill people with just one hit. The effective range of a Minie bullet was from 200 to 250 yards, a huge improvement on earlier ammunition. Another major enhancement was the defensive war strategy. The defensive war strategy was basically a strategy where a belligerent mainly tries to defend their land unlike most nations who tend to just tried to conquer other lands. The introduction of the rifle greatly impacted the war. The rifle was a very strong weapon. The rifle along with the minie ball, was a deadly combo.
