McDonald’s recipe for success Michael Lewis Trident University Functions of Management and McDonald’s INTRODUCTION McDonald’s USA, LLC is the world’s largest chain of hamburger fast food restaurants serving over 58 million customers daily. Overall, McDonald's tries to function on a cost leadership basis by offering low-priced goods coupled with higher profit margins. Most of the functional strategies adopted by McDonald's correlate with this low cost strategy. McDonald's management approach involves a mostly decentralized delegation of authority. The CEO is responsible for making large company-wide decisions and the overall design of the processes involved in the business. But since the company allows entrepreneurs to open their own franchise locations, it also allows these franchisees to manage their own stores as they see fit, as long as they follow the company’s stated values and procedures. This strategy fits in with McDonald's generic strategy of cost leadership and cuts down on the costs of executives traveling to check on each individual store. After over 50 years of service, McDonald's remains the industry leader in terms of total profits. The success of this monster company can be attributed to the balanced leadership style of Jim Cantalupo. After coming back from retirement in 2003, Cantalupo has had a chance to analyze the state of the company and set high creative goals in the form of his "Plan to Win". Cantalupo's plan aims to play off the company's strengths and reduce their weaknesses. Jim Cantalupo, who was made CEO in early 2003, and Charlie Bell the president and COO made use of functions of management (planning, organizing, leading and controlling) along with transformational leadership functions to turn around the company and make it profitable.
