Due to society’s creation of unrealistic images of what women are supposed to look like, many women who have lost a breast to cancer with experience a decrease in self-esteem and have other negative emotions. Coming to terms with breast loss and its effect on body image, feminity and self-esteem are major issues confronting women who have lost a breast or both breasts to cancer. Messages from the media, cosmetic surgery and health care profession perpetuate the beauty myth affecting the self-esteem of women diagnosed with breast cancer. The beauty myth says that to be attractive, women need to look a certain way and dress a certain way. Breast Cancer Power vs. Prosthesis Kathleen Shelton 11/4/2008 Breast Cancer: Power vs. Prosthesis examines society’s views of cosmetic cures/appearances vs. individuality.   Breast Cancer-Power vs. Prosthesis What honestly defines a woman in today’s society? Is it her physical appearance or her individuality? As I read this journal entry by Lorde, I can feel the same sense of loss and anger that she had to endure and overcome. Lorde did express her feelings clearly stating that, “Prosthesis offers that empty comfort of “Nobody will know the difference”.
Quality of Life and Functioning Thomas Case Scenario By Vanessa Schneider Western Governors University Personal Perceptions On May 8, 1990 my mother was diagnosed with colon cancer. That day is clearly etched in my mind, because it was my birthday. Less than two years later she died. Having lived a scenario close to Mrs. Thomas’s, I personally can speak about how one’s own perceptions in regard to quality of life and health promotion might affect the care administered to a patient with a terminal illness. Often when providing care for a patient with a lingering illness the nurse must refocus to ensure the needs and wants of the patient and family are being followed and not allow her own personal beliefs to interfere.

Maternal risks of a multi-fetal pregnancy include hypertension, preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, and postpartum hemorrhage (Multifetal Pregnancy Reduction, 2013). Maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality increase with each fetus. The most common method of fetal reduction is trans-abdominal multi-fetal pregnancy reduction. An ultrasound is used as a guide and a needle containing potassium chloride is inserted through the woman’s abdomen, into the uterus and into the fetal sac causing the heart to stop (www.webmd.com). Following the procedure, the fetal tissue is normally absorbed by the mother’s body.
My step-mom was diagnosed with breast cancer in September 2013. There are 2 different forms of breast cancer, lobular carcinoma and the most common form, ductal carcinoma. My step-mom had ductal carcinoma. Ductal carcinoma is when cancer forms in the breast tissue and begins in the lining of the milk ducts, thin tubes that carry milk from the lobules of the breast to the nipple. Her cancer was also invasive which means the cancer spread from where it started in the breast ducts or lobules in to the normal tissue.

Studies show that when a fetus is being aborted it does indeed feel pain. There is a video titled “The Silent Scream” that shows a suction abortion (one method of abortion) where the unborn child tries to dodge the suction instrument and its heart rate doubles. When the suction instrument does catch the fetus, the fetus's mouth opens as if trying to cry or scream the same way an infant would if it is in pain (The Silent Scream). The pro-life side also emphasizes that after a woman has an abortion there are psychological and physical consequences that can occur. The woman may feel guilt, anger, anxiety, depression, and even suicidal thoughts may occur after the woman has an abortion.
This is one of the main risk factors for developing breast cancer. Men can develop breast cancer, but this disease is about one hundred times more common among women than men B. A patient would probable choose to have a prophylactic mastectomy, which is the removal of a healthy breast, done in order to reduce risks of developing breast cancer in the healthy breast. Women, who decide to have a prophylactic mastectomy done, mostly end up with a nearly zero percent risk of having breast cancer. C. If Mary had not had the left breast mastectomy done, the ductal carcinoma in situ would probably cause her problems in the future.
