Manchurian Candidate In the film, Manchurian Candidate, Mr. Shaw and his platoon are captured in Korea and are brainwashed. They are unknowingly sent back to the United States conditioned. Once home, some of the soldiers start to have reoccurring nightmares. Marco, a platoon member, wants to investigate this issue, but can not since he has no proof. In the mean time, Raymond Shaw’s brainwashing is tested by the communists and kills the newspaper owner, Mr. Gaines. Raymond’s mother, Eleanor Iselin, is in on this and tries to get political power by taking out whoever stands in her way. She uses her husband as a puppet and he accuses everybody as communists, when Eleanor actually is. Raymond’s brainwashing is tested a few more times before the main affair. During this time, Ben and others platoon members are trying to figure out what is happening. Ben finally realizes that the Queen of Diamonds is the stimulus of the brain washing and talks to Raymond before his mom gives Shaw his instructions. First off, as an educated student, he or she can look for the first signs of conditioning. Once the signs are found, they can start to mentally prepare for the upcoming attempts to break them down. The student can then detect what the group wants them to do and see through their desires. Before the conditions become worse, the pupil can go over what their values are and decide not diverge from them no matter the cost. If perhaps the student becomes “broken” they may be able to effectively forget about the outside and basically zone out of what is happening to them. If the student continues these practices, maybe at the end of it all, they will not remember much of the experience because they were isolated and quite possibly keep their personality since they ignored the
