Maiko Nakamura EN100-12 Dr. Rivera November 04, 2013 Major Stressors in a Teen’s Life A teenager’s life is not as easy as most people think. Teenagers go through more emotional, physical, and mental stress everyday, even more than what we think they can handle. Statistics show that as many as 8.3 percent of teens suffer depression for at least a year at a time, compared to about 5.3 percent of the general population. Their depression is caused by the high demand factors in their daily lives like school, family, and peer pressure. Academic pressures are a major source of stress for teens, according to the 2007 NBC News article, “Academic Performance Top Cause of Teen Stress.” Most teenagers are unable to handle the pile of work assigned to them in school. As a result, many teenagers decide to cheat, or skip their classes. In doing so, they have to face a greater set of consequences like getting suspended, or worse, getting expelled from school. Immediately after, the teenager’s perspective changes as their family and people around them begin to judge their course of actions. Teens are directly impacted with anything that deals with their family. Any problem that occurs within a teenager’s family affects their behavior and the flow of their thoughts. It becomes a major stressor in their daily life. Also, when parents put a lot of expectations on their teenager, they add on a heavy amount of pressure. This causes the teenagers to work very hard to please their parents. Sometimes, once the teenager hits the age of 16, the age of consent, most parents add on to their stress by pressuring them to get jobs and contribute to their family income. Most teenagers struggle to keep up with their jobs while going to school at the same time.
