Multiples: A large multiple is defined as an organisation with ten or more branches. The chain is often made up of specially shops, i.e. those selling a related range of merchandise; for example, furniture, clothing and technology. Variety chains like M&S and some branches of the larger food multiples like Asda. Department stores: A department store is defined as a large store selling, under one roof, but in physically separate departments, four or more different classes of consumer goods, one of which is women’s and girls’ clothing. Some large departmental store groups like House of Fraser and Debenhams own up to 100 branches and these chains are called multiple department stores. Supermarkets: This type of retailer focuses in supplying ranges of different varieties of food and drinks. In some large supermarkets such as Tesco they also have ranges of clothing that they also offer to their customers. This raises competition because supermarkets have significant buying power which retail products at lower prices than stores that focus on just one particular part of fashion such as Topshop.
