In this essay, I will discuss the disease Lupus and what I mean to me. Lupus is important and close to my heart because of member of my family has this disease. In this essay, I will also tell you what Lupus is, the cause, treatments, and hospitalization. Lupus In the United States alone, 1.5 million people have a disease called Lupus. Lupus is not a contractible or contagious disease but a cureless chronic disease. Despite the large number of people that has this disease; it isn’t well known or publicized much. There are only a few research foundations that are dedicated to helping to find a cure. According to the Lupus Foundation of America, 90% of the people that have this disease called Lupus are women. Some people may refer to it as a “women’s disease”, it can be affect anyone at any age. Scientist believes that Lupus is not a genetic disorder but may often be explained by hormonal factors. In recent years, Lupus awareness has been an issue in the United States. Lupus affects a different variety of people, but is most common in females. Women are nine times more susceptible than men are. Usually lupus occurs in people who are between 20 to 40 years old. While lupus does affect women more, Caucasian females are less likely to develop lupus than Asian, Hispanic, and Native American women. The hospital is a place my cousin doesn't care to visit. The sight of needles really scares him. He only goes because it's requested by his doctor. The hospital is a very quiet facility that helps individuals heal, at least most of them. The causes of initial hospitalization generally fall into three categories. The first is from the disease itself, such as inflammation or organ failure. The second is from other conditions, such as heart disease or diabetes, which commonly coexist with lupus. The last category included infections. It has been noticed that the same drugs that suppress the immune system so that lupus can't attack the body also reduce a person's ability to fight off bacterial and viral infections. “If a person has more severe manifestations of the lupus that brought them to the hospital their symptoms are going to be treated with aggressive immunosuppressant’s, and that's going to increase their risk of infection," said Dr. Joan Merrill, medical director of the Lupus Foundation of America.
