Looking for Alibrandi Growing up is a process where an individual experiences changes that allow them to transition from childhood to adulthood. The prose fiction novel, `Looking for Alibrandi’ by Melina Marchetta details the experiences of a seventeen year old girl, Josephine Alibrandi, and her journey of growing up. Marchetta uses the aspects of change, self-realisation and self-reflection to show who Josephine is and uses various techniques to make this clearer. One of the things one learns about growing up is that it inevitably involves change. In the prescribed text, the main character, Josephine Alibrandi, experiences that change her life. This is shown in chapter eleven, pg. 110 when Josie says `I’m changing Mama. I’m growing up. I’m finally seeing the light’. This exchange occurs when Josie comes out after the heated argument with her mother about her dating and then understands that her mother has the right to a life of her own. The use of this metaphor shows that Josie is changing from a selfish person to an understanding teenager therefore the change is a sign of Growing Up.…show more content…
At the beginning of this text Josie is a self-centred child who blamed all her problems on everyone else in her life. Whereas in chapter ten, page 100 she opens her eyes and realises when she says,` I’m beginning to realise I can be a little selfish’. After all the arguments with her mother, Grandmother, Jacob Coote and John Barton, Josie comes to understand herself. She realises that she over reacted and thinks that she has a terrible life, when she has a good life. Marchetta makes use of emotive language in describing Josie as “selfish”. This demonstrates Josephine’s new awareness of her reactions and self-realisation to responders and is a clear indication of growing
