The House on Mango Street The House on Mango Street, a novel written by Sandra Cisneros, is one of the most acclaimed coming-of-age stories recognized by a Latin author. Cisneros creates a novel set in a poor Latino neighborhood in Chicago within the period of a year. The setting of the novel greatly impacted the general focus because the main character is very observant of her surroundings and is trying to find her place in her own neighborhood and the world. If the novel were to be set in another place, the point of view displayed by the main character would be completely different. The novel consists of short stories that all connect with each other. They are told from a first person point of view, by the main character, Esperanza Cordero; she mainly expresses her observations of those surrounding her and her experiences as she is growing up. Sandra Cisneros uses a plot consisting of brief stories that Esperanza narrates pertaining to her life in her new house on Mango Street. Many of these brief stories are the expressive experiences that Esperanza is going through in her new home and with those whom she meets. Esperanza is at a point in life where she is about to mature from a child, to a woman, and the progress of these events are expressed through the details of the people she gets along with and what she goes through with them. In the first half of the novel, Esperanza is beginning to adjust to her new home and the changes she begins to face both physically and emotionally. She is influenced by a few friends whom live across the street from her and together, they enjoy living as children while progressively learning new things and beginning to mature. Later in the year, Esperanza begins to mature sexually and experiences emotions she had never felt before. She also deals with deaths in her family, which let her to relate to the elders.
